Dining room is not working

last modified: 7 years ago

I just can't pull this room together. Trim is natural pine. Floor is light oak. Walls are yellowy beige. Furniture is sort of mission style. Ceilings are cathedral with skylight. Dining room is open to kitchen and partially open to living room. Any and all advice so welcome.

hutch is too big and overpowers the room. remove it. Then try turning the table a quarter turn.

Like they've done here. bring in a craftsman style pendant light too

Your walls are too beige/cool toned (at least in the pic) and does not complement the wood.

If you want a yellow, do this shade (refer to the pic above. see how it's more golden toned?)

these neutrals also look nice w/oak

consider doing a nice blue which would look beautiful w/the oak.

This shade of blue. see how it makes the wood stand out?

any of the sage greens look great w/oak too

warm white walls. notice the area rug and light

one of those gray shades I posted. again, light, rug.

You could do a nice area rug to bring in some pattern and color if you like

I agree with all of the above comments. the drapes need to be thicker/wider with a longer rod. they are too skimpy. better mirror, more in keeping with the style of the rest of the furniture and colors.

Too much matchy, matchy, the hutch is to big. The sideboard it great. Would you be willing to paint the dining table or replacing the chairs with something different to break up the matching?

We really need more pictures. The large piece in the corner is wrong in that spot, it takes up way too much room. I would move it to where you have the buffet because of the vaulted wall and higher ceiling. without other pictures or measurements I would also try turning the table so it runs the opposite direction, centered under the light. Add color and interest with a rug that is large enough to pull the chairs out and still have them on the rug. Then pull colors from it to bring more color in the room. Move the plant to the corner by the window

I agree with all comments! Will definitely remove the cabinet (after I find storage for all the dishes in the bottom portion!!) , find a new mirror and curtains and try an area rug. Any suggestions for styles/colors for area rugs? Could a natural jute type rug work? I feel like it has to coordinate somewhat with my living room rug which is visible in a follow-up picture I sent. It is a beige/ivory trellis style rug.

em, are you going to choose a diff wall color? do that first before picking a rug. the wall color does nothing for your furniture. I posted a slew of colors, above.

I think even if you’re only able to paint the window wall due to open floor plan restrictions it would bring in some softness and color to all the wood. The gray blue color will be soothing but temper all the yellow undertones you have going on there. I would do some full linen panels (texture) on the window in a soft off white on a black metal rod. I’d bring in a black metal framed mirror over the sideboard. lose the China cabinet it over powers and crowds the room . Bring in a craftsman style rug with color. To answer your question no a natural fiber rug will just blend in to an already monotone room. There is no contrast here to make the room pop. Bring in a couple lamps for the sideboard top in a color from the rugs. Do an interesting tray on the table with some wood beads, pottery and greenery.
