IF your weather is not too hot right now you can move it right away. Just be sure to (a.) Dig a big root ball. (b.) Water it well before you move it. And (c.) Keep it well watered but not soggy wet after the move until you see it start to put on new growth. Don't fertilize it until after it blooms again.

If it's too hot I would wait until next spring. With our cold winters I don't recommend moving things in the fall. They don't seem to have a chance to settle in well enough before that first freeze comes.

to be safe.. you do it in dormancy ... either in early fall ... or mid to late spring ...

presuming its deciduous... why try to save all those leaves... when you can move it when it doesnt have any leaves ... eh???

if it just has to be moved now... try to shade it for a few weeks ... so the leaves can survive.. while the roots start pumping after the digging stress ... [if its small enough.. just a lawn chair over it.. or some such....]

it really depends on your ambient weather.. and specific location .. e.g. its supposed to be in the mid 90s for me.. for the next week.. this would NOT be the time to risk it ... unless i had no alternative ....

It's pretty hot here right now. Good to know that I should wait until spring instead of moving it in the fall.
