Caring for young macrophylla

I have a young macrophylla (not planted by me) in the shady back yard of my new-ish house. Looks like Endless Summer or similar. Last year it did not bloom; this year it has several blooms near the base, probably where it was covered by snow, and sent up one very long, tall flowerless shoot. I have had mature hydrangeas but not a baby before. Two questions:

1. Will it affect the plant one way or another if I cut off the blooms? There will probably only be 4-5 on the whole plant. Is cutting them good, bad, indifferent?

2. Is it a good idea to trim down the tall shoot to even out the shape, or is uneven growth typical at first?

Thanks!
