I’m going to be making some changes in the fall to this bed, and could use some suggestions. The spot I most need recommendations for is where that dwarf barberry is. The one I planted last September died, and this replacement looks to be on its way out too. Not entirely sure what the problem is, but suspect transplant shock. Doesn’t look like verticillium wilt. I won’t be too sad if it dies again because I no longer think it’s a good choice for that spot, and might get rid of it/move it even if it recovers.

What I think I want is a shrub/perennial that flowers and/or has big or bold foliage, about 2 ft tall. I really like rhodies, but know that isn’t a good spot for it, is there something similar but smaller and for full sun? I want a different texture to contrast with all the airy foliage and flowers of the lavender and tickseed next to it, and preferably something evergreen. Open to pretty much anything, but I hate roses (I know that’s weird, I just do).

Zone 5b near Milwaukee. Bed is 7ft long on each of the 2 equal sides, and 6 ft from the grass to where the walkways meet. House faces due east, pics below (in comments because I don't see anywhere to attach them in-post) shown from front sidewalk (zoomed out and close up shots), driveway (south) and front walk (north). Full sun entire afternoon. I’m planning to add another tickseed and 1-2 more shasta daisies grouped in the middle, so try to imagine it filled in a little more. If you have better ideas for that I’m open. The dead looking thing is a woodland phlox that rabbits mowed down after blooming, but it always comes back bigger and better in the spring.
