The only way to know if it's quartzite is to test it. None of us can tell you whether it is or isn't.

If there is a sharp corner on it, you can see if it will scratch a piece of glass. If it will, then it's quartzite. If not, then it's most likely marble.

Thanks. Yeah, I am prepared to test. Was just thinking that perhaps the name alone was enough for someone to tell me like they did with the Super White that was called Quartzite...but everyone seemed to know it was actually Dolomite. Maybe not.

I am having the same dilemma. We were told that Shadow Storm was a quartzite, then found out that it's dolomite marble so wasted a month. Now we are also looking at white pearl. Most slab yards won't give out samples, so we feel like we are taking a huge risk. We are SO frustrated and have to choose them by next week!

I know, Kristi! It’s crazy how hard it has been to find the right material, then to discover all of this nonsense around what is what makes ya nuts.

I am almost (almost) ready to cave-in and just risk having the soft material (Dolomite) as it is really beautiful. I’ve had Carrera Marble in the past, but this surface area is much much larger.

One of the small samples I have is a true quartzite. When I tested it, it didn't etch or stain AT ALL...tobasco wiped right off. It even stained the QUARTZ, which required scrubbing to get it off. I tested a pure white marble and it etched/stained the raw stone horribly, it etched with sealer and even etched with a coat of automotive ceramic coating. So, now we are on the hunt for the right Sea Pearl/ White Pearl slab. I am going back to tomorrow to find out which color the sample is and will let you know. We will receive pricing from our fabricator on various quartzite slabs today and may have to backtrack when we see the price tag. None of the slab yards would give us information.

I'm now suspicious of this dealer not knowing their stuff despite their great reputation.

Are you in a rural area and thus limited to this one particular supplier? If not, I would not return if you had the feeling they were intentionally misleading you. I cannot tolerate it when a business tries to deceive consumers. :(

We decided on Mont Blanc quartzite for our master bathroom so now just need to select our kitchen slabs. Our designer wants us to go with Super White but I'm so afraid of it being too delicate. We are heading to look at White Pearl and other quartzite slabs tomorrow. Half the slab yards we've gone to had slabs misclassified...it's VERY common. Now I won't trust anyone.

Yes, Kristy, it’s a mess out there. Our fabricator and our builder both told us of multiple example where Super White was a not great for their clients on previous jobs. Not just scratching, but chipping and etching issues caused them major headaches. Such a bummer as it is so beautiful! We just found some slabs of Infinity White that are great. A bit busier than I’d like but it’s very very nice. Silver Macubas was close but I spoke with some folks who’ve had issues with it as well.

Just on a side note - nothing is impervious to chipping... It can happen and in an active kitchen it probably will...ask the fabricator which edge detail they feel is the least likely to chip. I have an eased edge and it has a chip. Tiny but its there.

Change of plans! I fell in LOVE with this Santorini I found hiding behind a stack of granite today! I'm testing it and so far it is passing with flying colors (even the side without sealer) so will be buying this for the kitchen. We are scrapping the Mont Blanc and going with quartz in the master bathroom. It's just not worth the risk for us and will save us quite a bit of money. Today a saleswoman tried telling me most of their quartzite slabs are 70% quartzite and 30% marble. I was like...um...so it's DOLOMITE? She realized that she couldn't sell me her marble and finally admitted they didn't have the true quartzite I was looking for. This has been SUCH a frustrating search but I'm so glad I didn't give up!

@Kristy Lewis - Kristy, I love how your kitchen turned out. We are about to build, and I just realized our layout is very similar to yours! Any chance you could share how tall your ceilings are and what the dimensions of your kitchen island are? Thanks in advance!

Thank you! Our ceilings are 11 feet, and the dimensions of the island cabinets are 4'x9' with an 18" overhang. The cabinets go up to 10' with molding above.

The Santorini is holding up beautifully and is gray/cream/white. No stains or chips.
