wallpaper help/advice

Hello,
I’m looking to modernise this room. I’d really like to keep wallpaper in this room because it keeps the room interesting but I find this room is too dated.

Would you wallpaper this room or paint it and use artwork.

Any ideas on how to make this room more appealing.

(Ps-chandelier and dining table can’t be changed)

I love your table and chairs and the wallpaper. I'd look for a large hutch and sideboard. It's a big room and you need big pieces IMHO. In my town they are practically giving those trad pieces away. Also think you need a rug with different tones, like sage greens. I would lose the standing lamp and you need to lower the chandelier. Also re-think the window treatment. I realize my suggestions aren't making it more modern but I don't know that you can do that effectively if you are keeping the furniture and paper.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>Thank you. I love all those ideas. I also really love the wallpaper I just don’t love the tones it pulls. Also- during renovations one of the walls had the the wallpaper destroyed.

I agree the rug doesn’t match - it’s a family rug that I just don’t know what to do with so I’ve been keeping it around.

I LOVE all of those photos you shared. I actually haven’t done anything to this room. We purchased an old home and im trying to modernise it a bit.

Do you think I could create those looks without painting the wood paneling?

If you like the wallpaper, the table and chandelier, maybe replace the chairs as you didn’t mention those. Or recover them. Maybe host chairs for the ends. Remove the rug and get a large china cabinet. Floor length drapes for the window.

I love the idea of adding host chairs

Although I don’t mind the wallpaper, it is ripped in many spots. So I was trying to look for ideas that would work with the dark wood panels.

Starting with the right rug for your room, this could be a stellar dining room.

    • Select a brighter rug that incorporates the colors from the wallpaper
    • Selected a longer, maybe painted sideboard for the room
    • Add a decorative mirror above with sconces on either side
    • Install long drapery panels on the window
    • Replace the brass chandelier with one with some wood and iron
    • In addition, I might consider getting rid of the spindles and replacing them with one column on either side.

You are a magician with that photoshopping. I love that you did with that room!!!

I love the idea of a decorative mirror. I've done that and it does help reflect the natural light. I'm not a pro but I wonder if it would work to get a pair of mirrors hang them directly across from the windows.

girl wonder. There is sometimes too much of a good thing. Having a light rug will really help the room with added reflected light. Of course the largest expense for that room is replacing the rug.

Sometimes you want the light and sparkle without a true reflection, so an antique glass mirror is the answer.

The rugs were selected and placed in the room using the tool from RugsUSA.com Anyone can use that to see what how a rug appears in their room. The rest is just cut and paste. The room can be finished to look well put together.

Thanks Bev. Even as I was typing. I wasn't sure if it was a good idea or if the room would look like Versailles. ;) Thank goodness for professional designers, to save us "lay" people from our bad ideas, LOL.

Beverly thank you for all of your help. My problem with the current wallpaper is that it was pArtially destroyed during renovations.

Is it ok to just paint that one wall and leave the rest of the wallpaper? Or should I replace all the wallpaper (which is a big expense).

I was thinking of painting the room but I feel is lose that “grand” feeling.

Imho you will not lose the grand feeling if you get rid of the wallpaper.

Lots of factors depend on how easy it is to remove and this is a diy project, but, once again, you may or may not be cursing me out.

A properly sized wall makes it easy to remove it, but we don't know....some papers are "strippable", but we don't know that, either. Real paper papers (not vinyl) actually come off very easily, but we don't know that, either (sorry)

The only thing you can do, is get a spray bottle of water and spray it and see what happens...

And please don't paint the one wall. You can have a feature wall papered and the rest painted, but not the opposite.

This is a beautiful, beautiful room, It deserves to be improved upon :)

I'd definitely put the toilet on the table filled with greenery! Now, that's modern! JUST KIDDING! I believe the dining table is always the focal point in a dining room. Yours is nice but not drawing our attention as it should because the carpet and wallpaper are stealing the show. One of them has to go. You decide which is easier to get rid of. Or maybe you'll end up with bare walls and floor for a time until you can get used to the idea and find a "modern" direction.

Are you in the budget to replace the wallpaper? I would do a a red chinoiserie to please the beams and also your rug. Maybe paint your ceiling bright gold. Betsy Burnham-De Gournay or Thibuat

Good news is that only half the wall needs the paper removed! Now, while re-papering would be spendy do you think your painting skills are up for stenciling? https://www.royaldesignstudio.com/

    ps: I like the rug
