It works well, you can bury them an inch or 2 at the base to make it happen faster if you want. Blocking the bottom holes and drilling some on the sides (at least 1/2 inch, better to go one full inch, or the roots escaping may expand so much they block the hole and girdle themselves, the girdling actually isn't that bad because it returns energy to the plant) along the bottom will make it easier to dig them. Being right next to a fence is going to make it a little awkward in the first place.

You still need to water the container, if the potting mix gets too dry the plant will abandon the roots within the container and suffer next year.

There are some nursery publications you can find that go into much more detail. And fabric containers or inserts that will girdle the roots and cause backbranching in the container.

Many people tried,the buried pot method and it works very well.

The only time it will not work is ,if the soil in your garden,is heavy infested with nematodes.

But most gardens are not in that situation.
