mini split indoor unit with no cracking noise?

last modified: 7 years ago

My current mini split (12K BTU Chigo brand) makes cracking noises (see video) when the compressor starts/stops or the mode changes. For example, I have a home automation to automatically increase the set-temperature and switch from cool to heat mode at 4am. The cracking noise at that time often wakes me up.

First I thought it was a defect, but the manual says that it is expected because the plastic contracts/expands and or the refrigerant flow can cause cracking noise.

Questions:

1) Is there a workaround? Removing the face-plate and the 2 small airflow direction motors helped a bit. I am considering removing the air deflector plastic piece as well, but it is connected to the condensate drainage pipe which I wasn't able to disconnect. If I could confirm that the noise is definitely from the plastic, I would even consider replacing all plastic in the unit with custom wood/metal pieces.

2) Does someone own a mini-split that doesn't make the cracking/clicking/popping sounds like in the above video when the compressor turns on/off or changes modes, especially from cool to heat? From the discussion here, it seems like many people experience similar problems but there are some that don't. In this thread, I am hoping that some people can confirm that their mini split does not make such cracking noises when turning on/off or changing mode from cooling to heating, and provide some information about their brand/model. I would probably then move the current unit to the living/work room and install the quiet model in the bedroom.

Thanks,

Abhishek
