Kitchen Layout Advice

Hello!

We are seeking some layout advice for our kitchen renovation, and I have included kitchen + first floor plans below.

Some information that may be useful:

We’re a two-adult household, but hope to start a family after the renovation is over. Generally speaking, only one of us cooks at a time. More cooking than baking. Our ideal kitchen has 2 sinks, a built-in cutting board, and designated places for our countertop appliances (coffee, microwave, toaster oven). Our kitchen is used primarily for cooking + cleaning - we eat in the dining room the majority of the time. We can’t relocate the kitchen the where the playroom is currently, as the playroom will eventually become a screened-in porch off the kitchen.

A few notes about the plans:

The kitchen is roughly 12ft (top-to-bottom in pictures) by 15ft (left-to-right in pictures). The sizes of the openings (to playroom and dining room) are flexible. The aisles around the top + sides of the island are all 36”, the walkway below the island is 42". The pantry on the bottom left will have a false bottom running ~2/3 of the way towards the fridge, due to headroom issues in the basement. We would prefer to keep the range against a wall to use a wall-mounted vent hood. The divider between the kitchen and basement stairs will be a wood screen wall.

Appliance specs:

36” CD FD fridge

36” gas range

42” vent hood

Standard dishwasher

Our biggest dilemma:

In the current configuration, the cleanup zone seems inconveniently located as it breaks up the storage-prep-cook workflow, and is far from where we think we will store dishes (far bottom-left). Does it make more sense to keep a sink in the peninsula for prep, but move the dishwasher and clean up sink to the far side of the island? Any other things we’re not seeing?

Thanks so much in advance, looking forward to hearing your ideas!
