A Question for Your Consideration

I would like to raise a hopefully interesting question for your consideration. The question is what rose or roses would you use to make a display that could or would stop passing traffic and make people take a look? I have seen some very impressive displays posted, but what do you think would be dazzling enough to stop people in the street and make them take a closer look? Would you other companion plants?

If I were to do my rose beds over again, and I could still do this but haven't, I would purchase an arbor, and on one end I would add two impressive climbing roses to go over the arbor on both ends and meet in the middle.

I like variety, but I have learned that if you put at least 3 and better yet 5 of the same variety together, they bloom simultaneously resulting in a better display.

Since I like variety I have not done this so much, but am pairing up to 3 roses together as holes in my garden develop from winter die-back.

I have had an entire Master Gardener class pull over in front of my house while on the way to someone else's garden. It looked like a funeral procession pulling up, but all they wanted was an impromptu tour. That was fun. My front yard is crammed with roses and companions. Our front sidewalk, leading to the porch is anchored by an arbor at the bottom on which Colette and Rosemoor clematis grow. Narrow flower beds on either side of the arbor grow Young Lycidas, Angel Face, Ballerina, Tamora, and others. Ascending the sidewalk on the way to the porch, the beds on either side are anchored by huge Julia Child roses, followed by Twilight Zone, Augusta Luise, and Golden Celebration on the right, and Ascot on the left. Right up (smashed actually) against the porch are an Ebb Tide on either side of the sidewalk. If this sounds confusing, here's a look. Diane

I think that is the epitome of show-stopping! Unbelievable actually. I don't think I've seen some of those pictures before that show so many of the Roses together. Just unbelievable!

I’m sure you can come up with a nice display but what will it look like after the blooms are finished? At the flower shows you see displays that knock your socks off but a few days later NOTHING…. The same thing happens in rose gardens. So if I were you I’d concentrate on pleasing my self by planting the roses that I liked and forget about pleasing everyone else. Do you have the time to make sure everything is perfect, otherwise no one will stop. Well…. some will but they are the rose nuts (oops, that is about everyone on this forum… lol).

Diane. I bet that you have people always driving slowly by your house. I know that I would

Actually. you would probably find me skulking around in the midst of it all

Diane, I don’t think I’ve seen all those pictures either. The size and floriferous nature of your roses alone is very impressive, but their overall beauty and amazing colors is what really blows my mind!

I think here, if I could figure out which Old Garden Roses do best, probably for me it would be mostly Bourbons and Hybrid Perpetuals, also several of the Kordes and modern climbers would be included.. Hybrid Teas would be limited for this purpose, unless they produce lots of blooms. Various shades of pink would be the main color theme, with other colors incorporated, leaning toward lavenders and soft yellows.

    Diane,

Thank you for posting those photos. They are lovely. I adore the color combinations not to mention the plants are so vigorous and healthy. This would definitely have me stopping in my tracks to admire and dream.

The original question made me think of this post I had come across from user pappu back in 2006.

"I have a bed with 8 Livin' easy right on the front lawn and of all my roses, this is the bed that everyone gravitates to. A mass of shimmering orange and constantly in bloom, it is striking and a traffic stopper."

Photo included and worth taking a look.

I love mixture and variety in a garden but I do think this kind of mass planting really draws in a lot of attention.

Haha, To the original question: Anything in Diane's yard! lol

Otherwise an arbor of Quicksilver and Lavender Crush. People dont think the colors on LC are really true for a rose, so that might people look twice.

For modern Hybrid Teas, vibrant colors en masse would be show- stopping, I think... Pretty Lady Rose, Grande Dame and Beverly in a group would be a beautiful mix of medium and dark pink. The fragrance will make people want to stop by again...

I think there are some great pics of traffic stopping roses from Pappu. I was able to find his old posts once.... I'm sure someone knows what to search for Pappus posts I can't remember.

Oh I just saw a prior post is some of Pappu's lol. All his photos are traffic stopping. His photos inspired me to get Carefree Wonder.
