mud room heating help

Maybe it’s weird that I’m thinking about this during a heat wave, but I’d love some ideas about what to do on this 10 x 6 mud room. It’s right off the kitchen and has a door to the garage, backyard, and stairs down to the finished basement. In the winter, it’s brutally cold. We end up not using the entrance because it’s so miserable, and not wanting to use the basement because it’s so frigid just to even go through it. The space is finished but there’s no heat source. What’s the best way to heat a space like this in winter that’s safe but won’t be a complete waste of money? I’m thinking maybe an electric wall heater with a thermostat we can just keep on 50 degrees? Please share ideas

If it's that cold then you have significant heat loss from the area, either from drafts/leaks from the outside doors and window or just poor insulation. Address these and a small electric wall heater might work. Otherwise, I doubt anything is going to make the area hospitable.

Not sure how far you want to go, but here are some ideas that might help. Add storm doors to the exterior doors. Is that a multi-pane thermal window? You could add an electric wall unit. In-floor heating would have been a good idea under your tile, but I bet you don't want to pull it up now. How do you currently heat your home? Can you bring in a duct to add heat here?

There's currently no electrical outlet (though there is a light), so we'd have to open the walls to add electric. I definitely don't want to tear up the flooring, so I think it's too late for in-floor heating. I guess the big question is: what's more expensive long-run: opening up the ceiling to try to add a duct, or doing an electric wall unit?

Hi yes, happy to share. My awesome HVAC guy installed a toe kick heater under the stairs. He did the electric by drilling through to the crawl space. It’s not a perfect solution because it’s not something you run all the time. But at least it’s something.
