kitchen island color

We are building a house. Kitchen cabinets are white. Is it a bad idea to do gray cabinets for the island? I love it now but how long will that look last?

People have had colored butcher blocks for years. Doing the island a different color has definitely been a trend since 2010-ish...so the trend may change. I personally have very matchy/matchy sensibilities, so I couldn’t personally do a different color island even if it was the trendy thing to do. As long as you are not a flipper, do what you love :)

It’s over with now. Especially in builder grade product that won’t hold up.

Btw have you had dark floors before? If not you might want to rethink them since they show every speck of dust, dirt, paw prints, etc.

Gray is a trend that is on the downswing. Unless you LOVE gray, don’t do it

IMO if you love it now do it if you hate the color later have it painted a new color.

Go European Windows & Doors, do you know where those over island lights are from? The cylinder shaped ones? Love them!

tkhoodI agree, but unfortunately they are photos I found online so I don't know the source of the items pictured. I would get creative in your google search terms and I'm sure you'll find a version of them.

It's your party and you can cry if you want to...

If you've been around long enough this will make sense.

I love it. I loved it starting about 8 years ago and did it when I renovated our kitchen 3 years ago, still would do it now.

We have white cabinets (with pewter gray glaze) but did a dark gray island - we love it (still). You can get carried away worrying about trends - the things you aren't thinking of now are what you'll notice in 10 years as seeming old. And the obvious alternative - a white island - ends up giving you an all-white kitchen which is also trendy. You can't win with that crowd. Pick what you love.

Worry more about the cabinet brand, than the trend, for sure.

3 years ago and still loving

Let me repeat. If you love it, you absolutely should do it. Trends be damned

Be sure that you understand and accept what Duraform is. It is a better choice in many ways, but some people feel “cheated” over it. The other quality issues with American Woodmark produced cabinets, especially shipping damage, are a much higher risk.

I think having a darker island can be nice to break up the monotony of an otherwise homogenous looking kitchen. Also it seems just to be preference. It’s not something super “offensive” that people will care about & look at with disdain in the future.
