Laguna can be a monster. It has bendy type of canes and it not trained when young, will tend to flop. You get loads of flowers and they have a rose scent. Well worth growing supported.

Thank you also for that info. I just planted My Parade 2 years old from a pot and it will receive a bit of shade in the future when the plant next to it grows out a bit. I love this Rose! But now I think I need Laguna too!

I ve been thinking about getting parade. But I heard the disease resistance is not great? High PM pressure here in San Francisco...

I will be able to report back more later because it has been in a pot for 2 years suffering! However since I planted it in the ground it seems to have rebounded very quickly and is putting on new growth. We have extremely high black spot pressure here so time will tell.

Laguna grows mainly up but because the canes are bendy it becomes wide.. It is supposed to grow about 8 feet tall. I prune mine hard in the spring and it always comes back to 8 feet but it does strengthens the canes a little. Mine is planted in half day shade wth no disease problems.

I need to get pics of my Parade. While always gorgeous, these new ones since planting in the ground are unbelievably gorgeous with a much deeper center! And of course the gorgeous fragrance! Is Laguna fragrant?

I get most of my roses from Palatine. When getting a really old rose such as Parade, just make sure you get these old ones come from a rose nursery. Tempting, as it may be, getting older roses from places like Home Depot, need a climate that doesn't cause them any stress. They usually are prone to disease. It is always pleasant to stake a stroll around the very old part of a town with tiny scissors. OOPS.

Do you all have any opinions on a “Pretty-in-Pink” Eden vs. Parade vs. Laguna?

I’m gardening in Southern California coast about 6 miles from the beach, Zone 10b.

The wall that I would be planting it on is less than ideal... as it only get late afternoon sun. Would you take the risk and plant it in this location? Are there roses that will still have prolific blooms in bright shade with 4-5 hours late afternoon sun??? Or do I just need to find a different spot for it???

Do you know oldrosrian has passed away? I feel very sad at this moment. She was a great person I just barely got to know. I do not know too much about sun and shade tolerance because I am growing all three first time his year. They sure are pretty roses in intense shades of pink!

I was thinking the same thing, katya. Life is so unpredictable. Who would have imagined when we wrote these posts she would no longer be here to help us out with her experience and kindness. Parade is doing very well in a slightly shaded position. I would think with your longer season and more intense sun she would do well in CA with a more shaded site. I'll post the latest pic in a sec. I've always adored her colouring, but I don't grow Laguna for comparison.

I just found out last night that oldrosarian passed away... and it made me so sad... as I’ve have learned so much from the help, advice and knowledge that she shared in this community. It’s such a loss for our rose community. She was such a wealth of knowledge... and her garden had hundreds of types of roses... many very special unique varieties.

I’m grateful that the pics of her roses and advice she shared will still be here for newer rose lovers like myself to benefit and learn from.

Anne, I would say the flowers are medium with a lovely fragrance that is rosey as opposed to the green apple scent of its parent. I did have some larger blooms when it was in a pot, but not as many. It's becoming a vigorous grower that is easily trained. You can get a better picture of its size if you notice the chicken wire used as support in the above pic. In the following photo, note that the wall at this point is about 5'5" for reference.Please click on pics to see correctly.

I've had this rose in a pot languishing for two years before planting it out last summer. It has thanked me immensely flying through the winter with tip intact and basals springing up everywhere. It's colour complements my other pinks, as well. I love this rose!

Laguna on 6' fence

The weight of the blooms on Laguna after the rain and wind cause the canes to come down off the fence and blooms to droop and it is hard to retie cause she is so thorny. But prolific bloomer and beautiful. She makes a nice backdrop on the fence. Nice scent too. I grew Parade years ago and she was lovely as well

roserobin! thank you for those pictures of Laguna. Its such an impressive rose. I have two growing first year and I have to say I was taken aback when I saw the first bloom. I did not think I could handle it. What a intense and bold color. The hottest, darkest, most neon pink I have ever seen. But it fades a little in few days and I like the the faded color more. The petals just last and last and last. Unfortunately I could not detect much scent. Did yours take a little while to be fragrant?

What are the two lighter colored roses on either side? I am trying to create the same effect on a long fence/trellis. How much width-space should I give Laguna?

Vap thank you too for your pictures of Parade. I now have my second Parade in a pot from ARE. And it has started blooming! The flowers look just like in your pictures, nodding a little. This is a memory formed long ago, but on my previous, more mature, Parade the flowers were very large and a tad darker. Its nice to have this beauty to look forward to. I cannot detect much scent, very sad.

Which bush is taller? Parade or Laguna? Which one can take partial shade better? Thanks for any info. Years ago I saw Laguna in a pot, partial shade at Meijers with lots of blooms. The scent was strong and spicy ... I should had bought it but I wasn't sure if it's grafted or own-root.

I have Parade on a fence. It really gets taller than the fence, which is about 4' high, but I still train the canes horizontally. The front of the plant gets morning sun. Mid day it's shaded and in afternoon it gets some sun from the West. I don't notice a fragrance plus it gets some blackspot. But I like it a lot.

I planted a Laguna which has hung in there but not done as well as Parade. It's in a dry spot with root competition. I have a second Laguna in a pot which has rooted through the hole, and this one looks more vigorous. It's in part shade.

Parade

Wow !! Parade is stunning on your white fence. My neighbor took out his rotted brown-wooden fence and installed a 7 foot tall white-plastic fence with zero gaps (not even on the ground) so rabbits can't get into his garden. His fence looks fantastic.

I hear that Laguna is basically a once bloomer, especially in hotter climates. How true is that?

Laguna blooms in spring and then again in fall here in N FL..it is a huge unruly climbing monster with talons rivaling the infamous Mermaid's lol. My Laguna is sort of neglected though because I try to stay a safe distance lol. In fall, her leaves get some sort of fungus (not black spot) and she sheds them and they grow back clean. Her flowers are exquisite. I dont spray here due to being on well water etc.

I dread cutting her back & moving her. I barely survived chopping Mermaid back. Hubby flat out refuses to deal with the thorned mosters now 🤣

@erasmus_gw your Parade on a fence is just sumptuous! Do you think it could grow along a short fence with Desdemona standards growing above it? It's a part shade (afternoon shade) area.

Thank you, Robert. Many roses can handle a.m. sun, p.m. shade. Especially if they get sun till at least 1 or 2 o'clock. I think my Parade on the fence has learned that I want it to grow horizontally. It is above the top of the fence. I've seen pics of Parade that are pretty tall so you have to train it. It has very good vigor. Not too sure how tall the Desdemona standards will be...Parade might obstruct the view of those.
