Bathroom vanity plumbing through floor

My husband and I are in the middle of remodeling our home. We converted our 3bedroom 1-1/2 bath into a 3-2 So we had to pull permit for that. The inspector made us bring the drain for the bathroom vanity through our subfloor due to the fact that where we would have put it in the wall there is a structural beam that we weren’t allowed to notch at all. So the problem we are having is how can we plumb the drain to where it will be legal with a P-trap and not an S-trap? Also, We have built a beautiful open bathroom vanity which I am worried is now going to look silly with all of the ugly plumbing pipes coming up through the floor. Not to mention all of the holes I’m going to have to drill in my vanity :( does anyone have any suggestions to help with any of these issues? Thanks in advance for the help!

Just cut a hole for the pipe and use a decorative pipe, trim and connecting component as you would on the pedestal sink so you don't look at ugly pipes.

As the P-trap goes, you first connect "P" trap to a short length of straight pipe before you hook-down to the vertical drain pipe. By doing that you break-up the siphoning action that was created by a S-trap connection and this is why S-trap is not allowed any longer.

If I was doing this job in a situation like this with this type of vanity, I would make a 3 sided column extending to the back wall and matching vanity finish and enclose the pipe so it is hidden from view. IMO that would be the best way to go.

You turn the column and move it out of the way...Obviously it will not be permanently attached to have access if needed.

I’m not sure I understand exactly what you mean by a 3 sided column? Can you dumb it down a bit for me?

Courtney, this is how I would do this,

Top Section can be moved out of the way to service a P-trap, All sections can be attached, but they all can be removed if needed and you end up with a nice clean look.

Where is the vent pipe for this drain? Still in the wall behind the vanity? A Studor? DWV systems need the V to function properly. Just a pipe from the vanity through the floor is not going to work, no matter the shape of the trap.

GreenDesigns: All of our rough plumbing has been inspected and passed. All plumbing has proper ventilation. the inspector was the one who made us go through the subfloor.

I am a designer coming up against this situation all the time...the client wants a beautiful, modern, functional vanity (storage + drawers) and the plumber comes in and destroys the vanity in order to fit in a classic P-trap with vent. No one is wrong exactly...it's just that the plumbing has not caught up with so many of our modern/sleek design solutions. Home owners and designers see vanities as storage solutions; plumbers see them as ways to hide plumbing. these are not often compatible. I am interested in teaming up with a smart forward thinking plumber to engineer some better solutions. Maybe the next time your client shows you their sleek and beautiful vanity you don't have to say "that won't work Mame"
