Thanks guys..This is just installing a couple of doors...No biggie, but we got it off the blabbering I did online by making a FB page & posting it on a few garage sale sites in town & to all our FB friends. (One of the sites has 5,500 members, another 1,700 members. Also put an ad on Craig's List & will do some other marketing.
-the other quote he gave tonight was to install a screen door & revamp the opening so the screen can fit..work on the jamb. He quoted $200 to do it, including the screen door cost, picking it up, etc...so I thought that was a good bid.
When I get some good pics of what he is capable of I will show u all. He really is talented. Esp. on complicated trim and making a silk purse out of a sow's ear...

Jayme, I'm not sure but that sounds way to cheap to me. You wouldn't even get someone to come out for that here, let alone screen included. I had the plumber come and replace the pump that circulates the hot water through my floors and a zone valve. Total cost on parts was 360. the kicker is the 4.5 hours at 90 per hour labour. Cha ching, 802 dollars later, that's how we roll here.
    Night all.
@olldcan...There is a method to our madness...He figured it "might" take him an hour or two to put in the screen door. The door cost is pretty minimal as the guy wanted a cheapie model...so it's basically about $150 for an hour or two of work. the second bid, the one we got was to install 2 pre-hung interior doors. ..He figured it would take him 2 hours at the most..for $100 pay. This family has an entire basement that needs finishing done...so the cheap rate could get us a lot more work.
For a former supervisor of mine, he trimmed out an entire lower level of a home, including 8 doorways, baseboard in 6 or 7 rooms & a ledge going down the basement stairs...he did the job in 12 hours for $800.

I might have to get my dog a footstool. She can't seem to get up on this couch. Unless there is a cookie involved, of course.
Jayme, how is your son doing,,
Get her a cookie stool Kimdee.
Haha! I wonder if there is such a thing... it might not go with my decor, though. lol
  • 13 years ago
@Angela...I am not sure..he refuses to let his father or I know anything about his condition and won't sign releases so we can speak to his counselors, etc. He did call his Dad today wanting to come home, but he needs more care, so we want him to stay where he is for now and/or get referred to a dual diagnosis facility. Thanks for asking.
@Kimdee....LOVE your ideabook...I failed to click on it correctly and view all of it until just now...it's so gorgeous..truly lovely!
Jayme, thanks! I'm really happy with the way everything turned out and it's been so much fun! The pictures make it look so... showhome-like... and so much bigger than it really is, I was really surprised when I first saw them. I'm a lucky girl to have such a great place to call home.
Okay Jayme still praying for you and your family. Kimdee, you aint lying, it is a showhome-like house.

Jayme - your hubby sounds like he's on track for a great business!

One of the difficult things you will face is that he is good at lots of things so will get asked to do a wide variety of jobs. But, some things he will be better at (less time to do the expected quality of work) than other things. If he can resist the temptation to do all work and stick to carpentry, he will probably make the same amount of money for less labor because he will be available to do trim jobs where he can gross $75 per hour.

There is always tons of work out there...everyone has tasks that need completed around their houses. If you can use the principle of comparative advantage so he does only work where he's way better than an average "man with a van" tradesman he will definitely prosper. Many of the guys I know have become jack of all trades so they always have work but don't get enough of any one type to become really, really good at it. Plus, if you try to do everything, you need a huge number of tools so you can't afford to buy the best quality tools for occasional use.
Linda, that is really good insight.

Jayme, glad your husband is off to a good start. Best wishes for a safe and prosperous business!

Thanks Linda..Your insight is valuable to us. We had a chat last night about that very thing...prioritizing the better paying gigs & working in smaller stuff between. And he is focusing on his carpentry skills first..he is far above average in his skill level. The company he works for also has had him doing the "punch" lists for new construction for some time. He is sent out independently to install kitchens, baths, etc..This man is an expert at scribing in anything into any space...truly amazing.
He can professionally spray....worked 4 years spraying for a furniture factory & several years doing auto body spraying plus 4 more years spraying at this job. They often pull him into the shop to get "caught up"...which means they are behind as usual...so he goes in and gets them back on track as he can spray better and twice as fast as anyone else. But they also use him everywhere else all over their jobs-often fixing errors by working his magic. I know he has prevented tearing out and starting over on many things by his versatility.
I am very proud of him, confident in his skills. Thanks for your helpful input, much appreciated!!

There's either an incredible delay on Houzz, or something's going on, because I don't see any "OLLD 7/25" in "OTHER".
I just deleted it, started it in dilemma versus other.
I actually have time now, things are slowing down and thought I would check to see what my OLLD friends have been up to. I miss you guys! Roo, thank you so much for the beautiful Mothers Day wish! I am so glad you remembered me! I am so sorry it has taken so long to return your message.

I can't believe all the new faces on OLLDs, it shows how long I've been away. How is everyone? Roo, Judy, Mp, Astraea, Linda, Handymam and STK...we need to catch up! Sorry I've been the silent friend. Hubby finally made it home, bathroom, stairs and loft are now all complete!! I am tired, to say the least, but now it's time to focus on getting kids ready for school and see how my Olld friends are doing.

Roo, are your renovations complete? How did they turn out? Have you heard anymore from our bathroom conversation/thread we had going? I wonder if they got everything done. I would love to see their final pieces.

Judy, how is the Cape? I think of you often and wish I could be right there with you breathing in the wonderful air!

All the new faces, it's very nice to meet you. I drop in from time to time just to see what's going on. Hope all is well!
Hi tras, nice seeing you again!
Hi Tras, great to hear from you. Sad to say renovations stalled about 7 weeks ago when LA DD and kids arrived for a month, and I have just hit a brick wall since they left. Hmmmmmmmm.......... that bathroom thread is slowly coming back, as far as I know it sort of finished mid stream. I think she decided on the lights?? Or did she??? She may have posted a new thread with the finished job but I can't remember her name now and I don't get a lot of time to scour the new threads to look for things.

Is hubby home for good now?? I thought the kids would have another month at least off school.

    Thanks Angela :)
Hey, tras, missed you, too. Cape is great. We actually have a cooler overcast day today. My morning walk was so much nicer...no humidity.
Astraea, love your new profile pic! You look absolutely beautiful and happy! How is everything going?

Roo, how was your time with LA DD and grand babies? What a great length of time! I bet you guys did a bunch of fun things down under!! So envious! Hubby is home for good and we are slowly getting used to the transition. It's different having him home with no future departure date. It's great but also takes some getting used to. Kids start mid August. But we've got a lot to do to get my daughter ready for college and momma has a ton of adjusting/accepting and crying to do. Lol. I'm beginning to understand that's why I was keeping myself so busy, so I wouldn't have to sit and realize she's leaving. I've decided to take a small breather then start oil painting again. Husband cut me off when it comes to projects. He got home right in the midst of the stairs and upstairs, saw the chaos and money that goes into them and said no more for awhile. He now understands why I'm trying to get a business started. I need someone else's house and money to play with. We are out of rooms and $. Too funny!

Judy, you know your just making me more jealous! I'm a complete coastal lady, one day we will make it out of the Midwest! Ugghh the humidity alone will drive one crazy. The last two days haven't been too bad, but it's just a small break. How's designing going? Did you get the home complete that you were picking out paint colors for?

    MP, any new work lately?

OlldCan, how have you been? Where has Bobbi gone to? I noticed she hasn't posted the last couple of days. I haven't checked past threads. Is she still around?
Thanks Tras; I'm trying to enter new photos when I get them .. my original one was almost 5 years old! Enjoying summer, although it got too hot, and I have to be out on the boardwalk about 5 am not to melt. Yet today it got really chilly; in the mid-60s, after having it around 90 for 2 weeks.

Sounds like you've got "empty nest syndrome"; it probably just takes time to transition.
Tras, unfortunately they arrived just as a rainy period started here and continued for their first 16 days which put a dampener on activities in one way, but in another the kids were happy just to be with Nanna and do things here. The native birds co-operated and they spent hours each day just feeding them, which they loved. The last two weeks of their trip were really full on though catching up on everything they wanted to see and do and were very exhausting - made it easier to say goodbye though.

I really can understand how great it is to have hubby home but it really does take some getting used to. It seems at times like life is a case of feast or famine. Maybe though it will be nice he has put the stop on projects - time to stop and smell the daisies for a while.

Grands have till end of August till school starts, this year The Little Bloke starts, their school district has introduced a Prep School in lieu of preschool. Unfortunately they will be in two different schools for the first year. DD is really struggling with her baby leaving every morning and there will be a river of tears coming out of LA too.

One good thing I love about Houzz, it lets you play around with other peoples' homes too and doesn't cost a penny either.

Tras - just for you -

    A Touch of Love

You were six months old and full of fun
With a blink of an eye you were suddenly one.
There were so many things we were going to do,
But I turned my head and you were two.

At two you were still dependent on me,
But independence took over when you were three.
Your third birthday, another year I wished to ignore,
But as I lit the candles there weren't three but four.

Four was the year that you really strived,
Why, look at you now, you're already five.
Now you're ready for books and rules,
This is the year that you go to school.

The big day came you were anxious to go.
We walked to the bus, going oh so slow.
As the bus drove away and you waved good-bye
I felt a lump in my throat and a tear stung my eye.

For when the bus brought you home and you jumped to the ground,
You were wearing your cap and graduation gown.
Time goes by so fast its hard to believe,
Why just yesterday you were home with me.

So I am holding these moments as close as I dare . . .
In a twinkling, a woman will be standing there."

Ok, Roo, I am so pitiful...This one made me tear up. What can I say, even the new monsters university made me tear up. My baby girl was so young when we went to the first monsters inc., she was insistent that I take her to the second one so we could share in it as they went off to college. It was just her and I for the first eight years of her life, she has grown so fast. It's funny because my son, who's 5, gets the butt end of the deal. I hold him so tight cause I know I'm going to blink and then he'll be in his graduation cap. I'm probably smothering him but I can't help it...well, I probably could but I don't want to. :)

    My eyes are still leaking...
Well, sad to say but I don't think I'll be able to be the late night owl on here anymore. I've missed chatting late with you, Roo, while everyone else was in bed....with hubby home, I have a feeling this will be short lived. He's already tossing and turning because of the light from the pad. :(. TV doesn't bother him but some reason the pad does, go figure. I'm off for the night, thanks for catching up with me. I would love to see how your home is turning out. I love your color combination, I know it's looking beautiful!
Night Tras, sleep tight, don't worry that poem teared me up too, I thought it might help you get it all out. Funny about males and TVs isn't it.
