If coal was used as a cheap heating in the time it was built....the style of the home may not rule it out

If there is any noticeable change in the foundation wall on the outside..and any feasible access route for a truck...it is most likely a closed up chute...

Is there a fireplace in the basement? Some people put them in to easily load the firewood. The house is too young for a coal chute. There hasn't been coal trucks delivering coal in a long time. Coal chutes usually dump the coal into a small room with a door so the coal dust would be contained when being dumped.

@functionthenlook There is a gas heater in the basement with a chimney and a wood burning fireplace on the main level with a separate chimney.

I’m guessing it was the intake area for an oil heating system.
