Creek side grass and plants #2

Here are the two plants referenced in my first post. I tried to include that post in the Native Plants forum, but when I used the search bar it only gave me the option to select Native Plant Exchange.

Thanks so much. I think you’re right about the Prunella vulgaris, but after doing some research based on your suggestion I’m pretty sure that the Lysimachia is Lysimachia vulgaris, unfortunately. Well, at least two of the plants I asked about today aren’t noxious weeds!

Talk to your neighbor about doing the same thing to both strips ... each yard will look bigger because it can "steal the view" from the other. The typical driveway strip problem. 1 - Make sure you have good paving for going in and out the gate. 2 - Widen the driveway by continuing the paving from the gate at least one car door width along the driveway. The goal is to make it possible to get in and out of cars without stepping in snow or mud even if they are really close to the edge. 3 - Add a bench where the so you have a spot to put things when you unload the car 4 - Add a small deciduous tree or two placed to shade the bench, some fluffy perennial grasses, and a few landscape rocks. Kill the grass and weeds, gravel the rest of the area. Stop there.

Caroline, I have lived in the southwest and am familiar with xerascaping, but I now live in the very northern part of Texas. We get extremes in all seasons, hot summers and cold snowy winters with freezes well into March. It does rain more here than in the desert southwest. To be honest, I don't really want any pine trees (although I love the smell of piñon in the fire place, not what we're going for here, I know). If I could have my wish, I'd love to have maple trees and other beautiful fall trees as well as blossoming spring trees. As you mentioned, perhaps I can create some top soil mounds to create the depth needed.

Looks beautiful. The problem I have with using mulch (or dirt) is that I have two Carin Terriers who like to dig. I have tried to confine them to one part of the yard for their digging, but when they sniff out moles, It is difficult to stop them, unless I am with them every moment they are outdoors.

What a unique opportunity! River rocks would be the most low maintenance way to beautify the area and would stop some of the weeds from poking through. They would also add resistance to the water giving you a louder trickling sound. Go for a variety of sizes. Plant-wise, reeds are very low maintenance and thrive near water, just don't plant too many because it might dry up your creek. You could start with removing the immediate grass (70cm?) and add the rocks and a few reed plants and whenever you have spare cash, add to the collection. [houzz=]

The flowers and leaves look a bit large for L. vulgaris. Did you consider L. punctata? See the following snip from Weakley's key to distinguish between the two. You'll need to click on the snip to enlarge it for viewing.

Thanks for the info. I took a deeper dive based on your suggestion, but it led me back to my original conclusion - that among the choices presented, it’s L. vulgaris. l wasn’t able to go back and measure flowers (or take better pics); but the 2 photos I posted clearly show the whirled 3-leaf arrangement which seems to be characteristic of L. vulgaris. L. punctata has 4 leaves. Also, based on comparing an assortment of photos of the three plants, the L. vulgaris leaves look stiffer and glossier than those of the other two. Finally, the L. v produces flowers from each leaf grouping on stems that are about the same length as the leaves. I think it’s a beautiful plant and am sad that I can’t use it in my garden, but, your response and peren.all’s have started me thinking about other Lysimachia that could serve my needs. I currently have a large stand of gooseneck loosestrife from a patch that my mom wanted cleared out of one of her beds. Its aggressiveness is an asset where I have it and it looks great.

Unless someone comes up with a better possibility, I’m going with L. vulgaris. Thanks again for everyone‘s help.
