Lighting Design Dilemma

Looking for lighting for an open bookshelf.

I have a Restoration Hardware Parisian Cornice bookshelf. I would like to add downlight to the shelves. I want warm white and prefer adhesive but I am willing to screw them in. However I really don't want those LED strips. I am looking for something more traditional and a covered light.

My stepson built some bookcases a few years ago and used the same lights as are used over artwork to showcase it... (lights shining down on it).. They are screwed to the back of the bookcase near the back top and a small hole cut behind them for the wire to go through to plug them in. He only lit up the top shelf but looks very nice. The bookcases are about 6-1/2 feet tall with closed in storage on the bottom. I believe there are 3 shelves on top.
