My question is are you just starting to decorate or do you prefer very minimal furnishings? The balance is a bit off in my opinion because there are no window treatments, or rugs or anything.

Thank you for your reply! There is a large rug under the furnishings and a window treatment (a silhouette blind in the up position). This is a waterfront property with sweeping views from the window and along the right which the shot doesn't capture ... so that does factor into the equation. (This photo is a BEFORE to show the view.) Yes to both -- just starting to decorate and I am also a minimalist.

I really like the proportion. The boldness of size but with subtlety of subject allows it to hold its own with that spectacular view without jumping up and down competing for attention like an unruly 3 year old. My guess is that this artwork looks even better in the space at night than it does during the day....not an easy feat to pull off. Just make sure the lighting works for you.

I think it needs framing. Because of the lighter colors in the piece, it melts into the background. I'd pick a nice, minimal museum type frame in either a natural wood tone or black to make the painting pop off the wall more.

I see Sabrina's point with the framing. A black frame might tie in nicely with the sofas, and wood would do the same with the floor and chairs...?

Pick the frame to enhance the art, that always works best. In this case, I doubt I would frame because I like the expansiveness of the piece. If I did frame, then a very narrow float frame.... not black. Decisions,decisions! Enjoy.

edit to add: After watching the vimeos about the artist,I would be even less inclined to frame it.

IMO that is the space for the TV and then put that painting on another wall, could you post pics of the whole space

The painting is lovely. It would be better appreciated if showcased in another setting- foyer, end of the hall, top of the stairs, short wall at the base of the stairs, office wall, dining table wall....?

It looks blocked/ crammed into the space, like it just barely fits, and by default does not evoke a tranquil feeling.

What a beautiful room! I really like the painting. It took me a while to determine what the proportions were because the top of the console threw me off...I thought it was part of a frame.

It is gorgeous - especially the colors with that view. Have you considered hanging the TV in or on your built-ins across from the windows? Then you could watch TV from the sofa. The TV detracts from that picture and is a bit of a black hole imho.

Though - if your bookcase are filled in, that will create a lot more balance in the room.

Your space is dramatic and beautiful. I'm glad that you are in love with the piece but I don't think it is perfect in that space. It looks a bit crowded and the counter is gonna need something on it but that will block the artwork. It won't fit over the FP. In that spot I'd prefer something smaller and darker in color. That said I don't think we get a good feel for the painting from this photo.

I too would want the TV somewhere else (ow, my aching neck!), but I think the very large canvas makes a really dramatic impact there, pulling the room together. Trust your instincts!

I think it looks a little bland...and a little big...with your views and stark architectural features I think that space deserves a more striking piece of art...and not completely covering the wall like a mural....this one kind of gets lost...this is the perfect setting for a drop dead piece of art...

Also some striking color would bring more life to a pretty sedate monochromatic room...

I would not move the tv...that is the perfect spot..altho’ a little high for viewing..unless you recline/relax almost completely when watching tv...

Why can't we buy tv's that are white or light gray when they are off instead of always a big black hole?The painting is gorgeous and I love it in that space, esp with Grover's frame on it.

I love the art just where it is. It’s dramatically large and looks beautiful with the narrow gold floater frame in Groveraxle’s rendition. The asymmetry adds interest to your room. I love your dark sofas against your beautiful white fireplace too.

There are TV mounts that allow you to pull a TV out to clear the fireplace mantle and down for viewing at eye level. I think the TV is fine where it is. It’s definitely not the first thing you notice in your lovely room.

It's a cloudy day today, but here is a fuller context of the room (from the fire place). The swivel chairs are there for occasional TV viewing. The TV is on a mount that pulls out and tilts downward. Thank you for all your suggestions and wonderful compliments too, of course!

If you can't switch tv/painting, then I'd go for a slightly smaller canvas. I like the painting, but the proportion looks off because of the small tv right next to it. Just for grins, try getting a canvas a size smaller and hang it up. lets see how that looks

If you own the art, find a better display spot for it. It is really beautiful. Have a entry/hallway? It would look great there or a living room wall? Dining room wall? Any place where it can truly be enjoyed. If possible I would definitely get the TV off the top of the fireplace wall and onto the built in area. We have it over a fireplace (no choice here) and I am even more sure this is a bad idea. Then pretty art of appropriate size for over the mantel. Even layering various sized art would look interesting since you don't have a lot of height there as far as I can see.

You asked only about the art...it's fabulous. Keep it. What I can see in your other shots, is this seems to be your best spot for it due to windows. I have 4 canvasses over 5' square, only one is framed. Art should ALWAYS be what you love. It's also very hard to photographed in a room. I could post my home here and get tons of "change this" feedback, but most folks are stunned when they walk into my space. I love it, and if you love this painting, that's all that matters. Your home is beautiful.

Art is completely subjective, so it just depends on your love of what you have chosen. If you go with this painting, you need to beef up the lighting above in the niche.

Sorry OP. I do agree with some of the others that the TV should rest in the niche. Does the artist have a similar painting that would fit in a place of honor above the fireplace? Or could one be commissioned? I am drooling over your view!

Since you have this on loan, I would look for something different perhaps with more color or even wallpaper there. So many great wallpapers out there right now.

No one can see it in that niche. It's dark and the fireplace blocks a view from the sofa by the windows. It's too big for that spot.

This art is a reflection of your understated aesthetic... adding special lighting always bring out the subtleties...

YOU will see it in that niche. I think art that you love should be displayed, if possible, in the rooms where you spend the most time. I don’t spend much time in my entry or hallway, the top of the stairs (?), etc as suggested. If you love it, I do too, keep it where it can be enjoyed the most. I agree that a narrow black or natural floating frame might define & enhance it. Beautiful view.

Another idea would be to paint the niche wall a slightly different color so it doesn’t blend into the wall...removing the need for a frame..the frames do not enhance the art in my opinion...but as is they do define the art perimeter better

It's perfection don't listen to anybody else and using a frame there would be awful :) I would just put something on the shelf below it such as two candle holders on the left side OR a single statue on the left side such as a buddha statue or buddha head statue or maybe a statue of a water bird since the place has a great view of the water.

Nobody can watch tv placed in a niche. No matter where you sit you have to turn sideways to watch. I don’t get that at all.

Perhaps box in your TV in such a way that no one knows it’s there. Then your art would stand out on it’s own more without the conflict of the TV

I have an oil painting about the size of yours and hung in an inset like yours. I painted the wall behind in black (there are small areas of black in painting) in lieu of framing and love it.
I have paintings throughout my home and love to look at them as I walk through. If they don’t bring me pleasure, I give them away. (Not many have gone.) The point I’m making is that while we want our homes to look good, paintings are more than just decoration. They should bring joy when we look at them.
So if you love it keep it!
