Climbing rose setigera?

Hi everyone. I have a climbing rose setigera plant currently in a large planter. Yes, by the way, I do understand that I need to put this plant in the ground and will be transplanting it and giving it to someone else in my family very shortly. In the meantime I am simply curious about New Growth that I am seeing coming from the base of the plant. This is the first sign of a flower that I am seeing. Is this possibly the first of the actual flowers of this plant, or is this some other type of plant that has taken root in the same pot.? Thank you for any insights.

Even if you only have containers the seeds of Epilobiums are spread by the wind. Yours is not the spectacular Chamaenerion (formerly Epilobium) angustifolium you might have found images of. It's one of the small flowered weedy species, possibly Epilobium parviflorum. The one in your picture has already begun to disperse its seeds. It will end up in other people's gardens too.

Believe me, I am a plant lover and do not run a sterile garden with no room for self sowers, including wild plants. But this one is a nuisance in a cultivated setting and has little decorative or wildlife value and isn't edible. So I would class it as a weed when it occurs in a garden. Outside a garden setting it is a wild flower for me, but not for you. It is not native to North America and is classed as an invasive species in some states. It will also be hard to transplant as you'll find it has a considerable root mass and has a habit of breaking off leaving roots behind.

That's just a weed :-) And from what I can see - not much - looks like willowherb, Epilobium/Chamaenerion species.

If that's what it is. Maybe I will dig it up and put it in another pot, as from what I'm seeing online it looks very pretty. By the way I'm curious ...how is it that you are so knowledgeable about such a wide range of plants? :-)

Lynn, it's a very common and annoying weed and will self sow all over the place if allowed to go to seed. Not worth keeping.

I only have a container garden, so self-sowing plants are not that problematic for me. Also, I am not a fan of the term 'weed', as I think it stigmatizes certain plants. ;-)

But seriously though...one man's 'weed' is another man's fixings for a salad (dandelion, purslane, etc.), right? I find the term 'weed' to be very subjective. I love dandelions as part of the garden...ditto for red clover, etc...

I've been doing this for a looooonng time :-) I am also a professional horticulturist. But there is still a ton of stuff I don't know. As floral noted, that weed is dead common.....I am pulling it constantly. It grows freely in my area in any disturbed ground.
