Psssssss-------- BLT, BLT!

last modified: 7 years ago

I was going to do some work in the garden. I passed by my tomato patch. I could hear all the tomatoes were whispering to me, " Pssssss------ BLT, BLT!!!", " Pssssss------ BLT, BLT!!!", " Pssssss------ BLT, BLT!!!", -----

What choice did I have?

So I went inside and made a BLT. :-)

Oh yeah, that's some fine eye candy. Have you ever used chard and made a BCT? My wife and I enjoy them more than BLTs.

    Just YUM!

Forgive me, but what is the black condiment? I'm too lazy to cook bacon but I don't miss it because I made a very thick basil vinaigrette that goes on my tomato sandwiches.

Love BLT only at our house they are bacon and tomato -- no "L" for us!

YUM! I just made one the other day, which I hadn't had in years. Love your pic!

And you just gave me the idea for dinner. I've been spending too much time on dinners lately, and was trying to think of what sandwich would be good. Bingo!

Garden fresh tomatoes are the best ... 1,000x superior to the flavorless store bought, except the occasional Romas

I’m with 2MD, one of my favorite DC platings.

I‘m thankful for this thread because it reminded me of some garden tomatoes that my MIL dropped off last weekend. My only shot at homegrown tomatoes this summer and I totally forgot about them! Most of them still look kinda ok. I just got a crown and can‘t eat for an hour, but then I will make myself a BLT. Nothing like DC’s of course, and not only because I don’t have black garlic, but I’m looking forward to it.

FOAS, I bet you're right and my guess was wrong, dcarch's black garlic : ) Be careful eating, and enjoy your BLT! DH and I ate them for dinner 3 times in one week!

This is one of my favourite pics of yours, too DC!! It really, really looks good!!!

I too thought it was black garlic.....you're the only person I know who has ever had it, or even knew about it......and now we all do, thanks to you.

DC, what's not to love! Are those Sun Golds on the sideline?

Martha, why no lettuce? If you like basil, the lettuce leaf variety makes a great substitute on a BBT.

Beautiful, beautiful tomatoes, dcarch. I had a tomato sandwich a few days ago made with a lovely slice of Mortgage Lifter. No bacon, no black garlic, not even lettuce, but it was pretty darned good!

Nice selection of tomatoes too. They look a lot like some of mine, although I didn't grow any "green when ripe" varieties this year. In my kitchen those would be Golden Jubilee, Mortgage Lifter, Pineapple, Tasmanian Chocolate, Rutgers and SunGold. So what is that big yellow beefsteak type that looks like Pineapple?

Thank you very much everyone for your wonderful comments!

tsugajunkie , I have not made one with chard. I should give that a try. I like chard, and I have a ton of chard in my garden.

defrost49 , yes, that is black garlic sauce, home made.

Martha Scott , I don't always make BLT, I have made many kinds of B?Ts.

catherinet , Bacon was on sale. I have 10 lbs in the freezer. Good enough for the tomato season this year.

" Garden fresh tomatoes are the best ... 1,000x superior to the flavorless store bought, ---"

Thanks for telling me! Now I am unhappy. My tomatoes are only 500x better than store bought. :-)

FOAS, when I have too many tomatoes, I put them in the fridge. I know people say you shouldn't, but I have not noticed any lack of quality with chilled tomatoes.

2MD, you are embarrassing me. I know I have this bad habit of always play with my food. A friend told me this is the most "politically correct " plated dish: The tomatoes are rainbow colored, and the sauces are black and white peacefully hanging out together.

Andie , yes, those are Sungolds.

Annie, you should try GWR tomaotoes. That in the picture is Green Giant. In the oicture the yellowish one is actually White Queen, and the yellowish orange one is Amanna Orange.

dcarch, I have actually tried a GWR tomato, Aunt Ruby's German Green. I just wasn't impressed, plus it always seemed to get too ripe before I realized it was ready to pick. I was tempted to try Green Giant this year, just because it was supposed to grow to 2 pounds and I liked the name, LOL. I didn't, though, that place was taken by Djeena, which promptly died. (sigh) Shoulda, woulda, coulda......

a quote from miracle max comes to mind, from the movie The Princess Bride:

true love is the greatest thing, in the world-except for a nice MLT – mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe.

    That is really striking!

    Are those your LED tomatoes?

Also, are you still making those cool bacon bowls?

You inspired me dcarch. I made BLT's the other night and they were sooooo good. We hadn't had them in years. We don't eat much bacon, but we might eat more now that we've had a taste of the BLT's again and have so many tomatoes coming on. I started eating mine and decided to take a picture of it. But it doesn't hold a candle to yours, so just suffice it to say it was great. Thanks for the idea!

Annie, I agree. GWR tomatoes can be annoying. You have to be careful to make sure that you know when they are ripe. But they are very tasty.

bragu_DSM , Interesting idea, MLT. Many possibilities.

John, Those tomatoes had an early start in my LED seed start set up. The bacon on that BLT is done differently. It is not obvious in the photo, but there is one whole LB of bacon there. Most of fat was rendered out, just crispy flavorful lean bacon.

catherinet , I disagree! there is no such thing as a bad looking BLT. All BLTs are beautiful! yours included. :-) :-)
