Ugly kitchen color

Bought a beach condo with remodeled kitchen that has black granite speckled with rust accents and white new cabinetry and ugly red and black zigzag tile backsplash! Want to keep white cabinetry and granite but don’t know what color to retire backsplash! Help!

Pretty much whatever you like...what are YOUR colors is adjoining rooms?

Wow that is some tile! The design behind the range makes me think of an evil Charlie Brown. Ha!

Anyway, what color tile do you like? It might help to remove the tile first so that you have a clean slate. Can you post a better picture of the granite?

I’m sorry my comment did not post properly - I would suggest you start by searching white kitchens with dark countertops and start saving photos to an Ideabook. It should be obvious after 50 + photos what you like. Here’s a start for you... Good luck!

Thanks everyone! The rest of the house is pretty much a fixer too! So anything beach themed will do! My hubby and I will buff out the wooden floors in the home because the previous owner stained them dark red too! Eeek! I’ll post more pics for you all. We bought it because of the awesome beach views.

I would first paint the ceiling and take the red out ..then start thinking what you would like to see there ..go slow ..ripping out the backsplash is going to be a lot of work and dirty ..so be clear if you want a light gray or white ..and just keep it light airy and simple . It's a beach house with the most gorgeous views ..
Nobody is going to look at the kitchen ..and the crazy color and design of backsplash ...you can always keep it as a conversation piece ...

Red is a really strong color, and its going to be hard to make a decision with it in the space. Start by painting out the red (use some good primer), redoing the floors, and removing the backsplash (do this carefully to avoid damaging the granite). THEN you can make new selections.

Get a roll of white butcher paper and tape it over the red and black backsplash for a while...to rest your eyes and enable you to see what your kitchen calls for in a backsplash. As has been suggested, paint out the red ceiling soffit. And good luck with the floors! Once you see your beautiful home as a neutral blank slate...you will have a good idea of where you want to go with it! Good luck!

Is it possibly in person a saturated coral color? What about the lighting under the cabinets? the paint above looks from here a bit different...

Could make it an eclectic mess... I'm mean eclecticness... ha... well it could be used if you like the beachy colors the red goes with -- sofa has straight lines like the rug.

Whatever way you might experiment to cover backsplash - could cover above stove with peel and stick tiles.

This could look beachy and add sheen [seems to]. It's not strong green - could be repeated with tempered glass-top tables.

Building Lab, inc. "The glass is white laminated glass - green hue mostly originates from qualities intrinsic to the glass. Of course, surrounding and reflecting colors also influence its appearance...often referred to as 'white lamy' this type of glass is typical, 'off the shelf' specification. It consists of a white filament sandwiched between two pieces of 1/8" or 3/16" thick glass. Glass supplier is Heavy Lux."

I think the wood floor is brown with red in it... could cover easily with large seagrass or jute rug...

Floor? don't draw too much attention to it with pattern and brights. I doubt I'd hate it... but ignore it if it doesn't 'hurt'. ;)
Or if you find a rug with mix of colors you like, and blend in the floor, that's a win.

You have received some good advice from commentators above,

    Definitely paint the soffit white.

But, what if you decide not to rip out the backsplash? The condo has a sleek look to it.

You could do a modern beachy rug, modern bar stools and change out the pendants with everdebz’ Pissarro art suggestion.

There is no explanation for some people’s tastes.....the best you can do is remove the horrid tile and replace it with something in a nicer, more muted tone. You need to consider the counter color, the floor color, the cabinet color and the natural light in the kitchen when selecting the new backsplash tile. Have a pro remove the backsplash and clean up the walls. You can paint the soffit to match the cabinetry or the ceiling.

Wow. It’s obvious why you bought the house. I would suggest deciding on a color theme - blue and white is classic and great for ocean view homes - and start looking at all kinds of tiles in the color blue you like. Or a soft green. If you’re talented, you can use both. I envision a blue glass backsplash with similar tile surrounding the fireplace. Lighter floors will be a huge boost to changing the feel. Search Houzz for white kitchens with glass backsplashes.

And yes, remove the backsplash NOW, so your eyes can “see “ new options. That red/black combo would make me unable to drink my morning coffee.
What a fabulous opportunity to creat your new ocean-view lair! When you get discouraged, the view will be a pick-me-up.

First get rid of the red ceiling ..., then the red lamps ..., then take another look . If you have the money to replace the backsplash , do it , If not take another look before you rip it all out . With those views ...I can hardly see the red ( except for the evil pattern behind the stove ) actually , this red design makes me laugh ...and am wondering if you can use it to cheer you up every day . . ?
