Pigeon peas don't like to be transplanted, and will not get as large if they are. My first one was transplanted and it only got about 7-8 feet tall, but that's plenty enough to get a lot of peas. I planted my new ones straight into the ground and one is about 10 feet tall now and just keeps growing. A couple of them just have hardly grown at all.

They bear well for about 2-3 years, then they start to decline. Usually, though, they don't last that long up here. Mine froze in its second winter when we had a hard freeze. They may get to 20 feet in the wild, but most people who grow them in the garden keep them short enough so it's not so hard to pick the peas.

Rita they can get that tall. DG is right they don't like to be transplanted. They are great plants. Production is very good. The flowers are pretty and the bees love it. They are freeze sensitive. It also make great chop and drop and are a nitrogen fixer. I have found it to be a good addition to my garden. As far as eating them I have found that if I treat them like black eye peas they are great. If you lose yours let me know and I will send you seed.

I planted some in half gallon pots this spring. They grew 6ft tall and rooted themselves into the ground through the pots. I have been extremely neglectful of the garden this year, I admit lol. Its been way too hot and humid to the point I halfway dont care anymore. It looks like it might be flowering anytime now. It hasn't needed any staking. Clearly these plants can take some abuse. :D

Sultry, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a bad attitude about the garden this year! Anyway, it sounds like I'd better find a spot for them quickly, now just where?? Do they attract squirrels? If so I don't want them close to the house.

The Squirrels don't seem to like them too much, at least mine didn't. I think we all had a bad attitude this summer with this insane heat.
