You want engineered wood flooring with at least a 3mm wear layer. Not going to happen for under $5

We have ordered 3x from fastfloors.com and have had great experiences. We just shop local to see samples in person.

fastfloors didn't list wear layers but i looked up and 2mm...

Have a look at Goodfellow brands - -they have several brands and some are wide plank (up to 8" wide) I assume you are in the US - I think they might have pricing in that range. Goodfellow brands are carried at Lowe's and Home Depot but not the nicer, wider lines that they have. You'll want to go to a flooring store to see it. I liked what I saw.

You would not be purchasing quality in that price range. Narrow the width, and you can get to a medium quality product. And avoid the numerous issues of wide plank. It requires exacting humidity control and the proper moisture barrier over the slab, or an upgraded moisture control glue. $$$$

i didn't think engineered had the problem with wide plank? I knew to avoid wide plank real wood...any ideas for maybe a 5" then? i don't want to go smaller...I compromised in 2008 when I put in 5" here in my current home and really wanted to go wide this time around... sigh

Hi, I mentioned Goodfellow flooring above....the brand name for the wide plank engineered is From the Forest. Seems like they have some sale pricing listed and links to vendors. I've only seen samples, not an installed floor - it looked very nice. Regular pricing ~$8/sq ft, on for $5. Worth looking at to see if it meets your needs.

Elegance Plyquet Engineered Floors

We used a 7" wide engineered floor from BellaCella (Pompeii Collection, Hickory finish). We got it at our local flooring store for $5.50. Not sure how thick the wear level is, but it's been down 4 years and still looks good. The planks come in varied lengths, which we liked. We installed it ourselves, nailed down (over crawlspace, not a slab). So far, I've had zero issues with bowing, cupping, etc.

Thanks all. I found a local shop that has 4mm wear level for $5.99...and others for $4.99 so I feel like I can get closer...hoping to catch a sale...we haven't broken ground yet so have some time..

Check country of origin if you don’t want to be gassed out of your own home. Lumber Liquidators faked CARB compliance was the ones that got caught. All of your discount surplus box liquidators are the worst sources ever for quality.

Wide plank engineered requires a lot more work to make it work. Work that ups the install price and your HVAC price. If you don’t buy the good quality that has the specs specific internal layers, you’re going to get internal separations from the different expansion rates of the different woods used in the sandwich. You‘ve thrown away money on poor quality when you have to repeat in 5 years time. Or less. Or you can spend to do it correct, once.

It requires a better moisture barrier than standard polyurethane glue on a slab. The $100 a gallon, not the $25 a gallon stuff. On a subfloor, it requires glue assist to the staples install. It’s more labor to do right, on top of the more expensive installation products.

This is why any industry expert will tell you to start the budget clock at $20 a foot, all in, for a good quality wide plank installed properly. That includes all of the things you aren’t considering in your “budget” that will now cost more.

Khärs and Kentwood have some nice options if you can stretch a little bit. I’d stay away from anything $5 and below.

Kahrs is good quality and yes you can get a 5" floor for under $7.

We installed Mannington Engineered 5" in our current home in 2000-2001 ourselves...It still looks good...[kitchen hall powder great room].

I'm willing to do varying widths.

The hard part is getting it longer than 4' average lengths in the price and >3/8".

I think it is possible.

We are again installing ourselves so this is material only. We need close to 2200 SF [we are doing all main level except guest bathroom, and also doing stairs and upstairs hallway]....

update. Ended up with Hurst Hardwood 7.5" 1/2" thick 3mm wear layer color Riverstone for $4.50 [on sale; normally 4.99].

Haven't moved in yet but we like it.
