Hickory cabinets are staying... counter top advice needed! Thank you

I have learned to enjoy the uniqueness of my kitchen. The white and gray kitchens of today are not happening in this home while I live here anyways. I would appreciate advice for a counter top refresh. These counters have been here for 18 years and bother me. Too warm and brown on brown on brown going on...Any ideas.. I will attach of few of my inspirations...

Whatever art makes you happy to look at! The under counter lights aren't the best, but since they are already installed you can leave them awhile and then decide. They do provide a lot of light.

They are led battery puck lights and just stuck on with adhesive. Easy to remove but do work with the remote and dim too. I just dont want to see so much of them

I think I need to invest in something a little better than $40 amazon puck LEDs

Now on to backsplash. I will start a new thread. Thanks all for the help along the way :)

I have backsplash it is not grouted yet !! The backsplash will match the biscuit color so not nearly as much contrast. I thank you all that told me to keep my cabinets and not paint them in another previous post!!

The hardware makes such a big difference. Glad you kept your cabinets the way they were.

I think you could easily just paint that wall with cabinets and your little desk space. No water on that counter so don’t need it.

So i guess another question is would it look wrong to tile that area. I have plenty of tile and grout not returnable :( Its not the money thing I just wonder if it would look wrong or out of place.

The backsplash looks beautiful and I’m not sure why you wouldn’t use it on the desk wall. I realize things won’t get wet there, but it is still part of the kitchen...

It wouldn't look "wrong" to tile the computer area, since it is a part of your kitchen. But imo, the drywall alone looks best because it makes it look like more of a built in furniture piece rather than a kitchen work area. It will look fine either way.

@calidesign Thank you for helping me understand my dilemma! B

Looking good! I’m also one to like the painted wall by the computer area. Maybe consider a tone from your rug - doesn’t have to be white paint there. A darker color might visually tie in all the little darker elements on the wall so it looks visually cleaner. If you like this idea it may also effect the art you select.

I think the painted wall will look best. Add the interest/color with your art. I think it will be harder to add art on top of tile (and also would look a little weird to me). I have a small galley kitchen and 12x24 tiles (smaller print within) but had 5-6 tiles left over. I saved in case I remodel down the road, but in the meantime have used them on top of some of my builtin pieces where I have plants and even one area that is like a bar area (mine are larger so I can set it down and not use grout), but maybe you can find a creative way to use some of them.

So I love love the undercabinet lighting I got for these two areas. There were outlets in cabinet so no wires are being shown. Plugged in .
What would you do with the area by the computer doesn’t have any outlets in the cabinet only near the floor

We have to remove all of the under counter puck lighting I had before half of it had lost power and did not Get a chance to change xenon bulbs to LED. I don’t like the battery operated puck lights I bought any other options doesn’t show a lot of wire without electrician work I have all the old wiring

    last modified: 6 years ago

either run new lighting off the old plug, or forget the under cab lights.

are you going to tile this spot? this would actually be a nice area to do some pattern tiles, or something w/a bit of color

even a wall paper would look nice there

you could always paper the inside of your glass cabs too!

Ooh I like that . Yes I want lading over there it’s all about mood lighting in my kitchen

Still debating on the tile etc.. just not sure what kind of lights to run off the old switch. It wasn’t compatible with the puck lighting I had before that worked and Dimmed-from a wall switch. Maybe the electrician just didn’t want to do too much more work

    Sorry for the typo above

Paper the inside of the cabinets instead of the whole wall?

@Beth H remember my inspo pic. I just love it but probly too trendy in my kitchen .

Well you’ll help me and a dry walled in the area will be done and painted tomorrow please please help me with art

Didn’t you find a piece you loved? Your kitchen is now very neutral so almost anything you love will work.

I did find a piece I love. But didn’t quite fit in that area I had it cut a little bit and put in new frame

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>Hello and Happy Holidays! I'm just now seeing this thread. So glad these choices won out as far as "biscuit" counter and backsplash! It is giving light to the kitchen. Also very glad you did not touch the beautiful wood cabinets. After the holidays I would try to do biscuit on the walls paint or tile. I would take my time on a lighter floor and choose a general color first before picking type of material. The rugs are brightening the floor. The hard part is over! Art? Pick something meaningful to you, or that represents how you want the kitchen to feel. Cafe? Homey? Garden-y? Farmhouse? Sophisticated? Food for thought during the holidays. Great kitchen!

You need to choose the art yourself, so it is something meaningful to you that makes you happy to look at everyday. The drywall looks great. I think that was a good choice.

Can you post a close up of you counter top and tell me which one you picked after all?

And please tell me about the floor you have?

I have hickory and am working on all these choices... I love the lighter color. light subway with contrasting grout....or light grout. I can not decide.

    Thank you - Denise
