Closet companies that offer 3/4" thick MDF with edge banding with hanging systems is my preferred material for closets. They last a lot longer. CA closets $$$ but great material. Hopefully, there's a smaller local company that uses similar material. The adjustability of shelving with the hole pegs is very functional to be able to adjust to your needs. Tell the closet designer to design within your price range to avoid upselling or you will not be able to buy.

Avoid the cheaper materials, they are thinner & do not hold up well & warp. The extra cost for edgebanding is well worth it.

@T C we used California closets because we had a large credit to use with them via our designer. But if I was fully spending my own money, I might have taken a hard look at elfa.

They both have high quality hanging MDF with edgebanding. I use to use them for clients, because their MDF hanging systems were superior MDF. There's are also usually local cabinet companies that have same material.

There are also closet companies that use less dense material & less thick or just build from floor up. I do not use those systems or materials. They do not last as long as the material I listed above. When build from floor up loose space to slide bigger items under & also collects dust.

You want to see a cut sample to see the how dense & think the material is 3/4'' with the upgrade edgebanding to protect the front edges to last much longer is what I use.

Avoid wire or metal that things can fall through & or get in way of hanging or leave wrinkles on clothes on shelves or '' wobbles on shelves''.

In our old house - when we were running out of money - we used one of the less expensive closet systems. We used two towers with 3 drawers below and hanging above, two towers with both high and low hanging and a couple of dress length closet poles and some shoe racks that sit on the floor. The theory was that we would replace with something better in the future, but we ended up using the original for almost twenty years. If I wanted to save $$$ I would do it again. No question the top brands are better, but what we did turned out to be totally functional.
