Oh, no, you cannot! You'll end up with 2 unfinished edges on every tile! That's just stupid. And, no, a stone will not produce a finished edge.

And the cost! Pointless expense for a guaranteed fail.

Get 4x4 and move on.

Beth -- you're right. The hex is nicer. if I'm using 3 by 6 subway on the walls - stacked -- what size hex tile do I need??

I like the Rhombus from Merola tile at Home depot. I think it will look great w/your subway

and you could substitute a few of the white ones and make a little design. (it's white w/the black, but you would have the white flower or star)

with your 3x6 subway, you could use a 2x2, 3x3 or any other type of mosaic. it will all look just fine.

I put in 3x3 black porcelain called “The Rock” by QDI. It’s been 2 years, but I really wouldn’t think something like this would be hard to find. Have you gone to some large tile showrooms or warehouses?

Crossville Color Blox mosaics are 3x3. Lots of nice colors.

Sorry, shirlpp; it is stupid to tile a shower floor with tiles that each have 2 field-cut edges. It will look like a garbage hack job and feel like it underfoot. No tile professional is ever going to agree to that. It's the kind of thing people come here crying about after the fact. Plus, it's going to add a lot of cost to cut with any kind of accuracy in the field, and they'd still end up with garbage.

Just use full tiles in the field and make cuts only at the corners and around the drain as necessary.

There is no point in people asking for advice here if they just get led to a hack job. They should expect best-practices, not handyman kludges.

Sorry Tatts. Shirlpp is correct. It's done on the majority of my projects to achieve a perfect match to large format wall tiles. I will set the size to the drain grate which provides a clean uncut look at the drain. Use rectified tiles as they have a square edge. Hit cuts with a diamond pad. You won't see the difference. Stone would even be easier. No war of words just facts and knowledge.

I had small format, matte black tiles on my shower floor, and they were very good at showing mineral deposits that were impossible to remove. They were the main reason we had the shower torn out and re-tiled with more forgiving porcelain tiles in a lighter color.
