Did you check the bills for cost per units of gas and electricity? ie, therms and kwh?

I would suggest looking at your meters before you start a load and watch it during to see if you see a crazy spike in both gas and electric and measure if after a cycle. You should also get a baseline reading for a few hours before and after of the usage.

You are assuming that these appliances are the reason for the increase in the bills. You need to do further research. For example, you could turn off all electricity- and gas-using devices, read your meters, wash and dry a load of laundry, and then reread the meters. You should also check whether rates per kWh and per therm have changed, whether the rate schedule has tiered rates (which disproportionately increase rates with usage), or whether seasonal rates have kicked in. Do not assume that the change of appliances caused the increased; in all likelihood, the new appliances are far more efficient than the old ones. Do not forget that it has been very warm in some places and, if you have AC, you may have run it a lot.

The utility companies can also help with determining the reasons for large increases in usage and bills.

Yea, I agree -- check out issues w/the bill first. I would call on it. Also ask if the bill was an estimate or actual read; if it was an estimate, it will all even out on the next cycle or two.

I opened the bill on my phone and didn't really check who it was from. It was my water bill!
