Can you post photos? It depends on how the plant was propagated and its age but they can present both ways that you describe. One is not necessarily better than the other :-) I'm not sure you can easily change the appearance of the existing plant, but these are easily rooted from stem cuttings so you could always take some cuttings and once rooted, add to the container for a fuller look. Or it could also sprout some new stems on its own if happy and doing well.

And no, they are not genetically modified :-)

This is the photo of my plant, I apologize for the wait as I have not been home ,as you can see the plant consists of a couple good size stalks but no new growths or tiny sprouts

it looks pretty good to me. In time, it will grow more shoots/branches. If it ain't broken....
