Kitchen cabinet disaster

I decided to paint my kitchen cabinets white but it looked terrible so i then covered the paint wirh a stain and it is a nightmare. Ive been trying to strip all the paint and stain off but i was wondering if i just found a really nice color for the cabinets i could paint them instead of restripping them. Any ideas?

Oh my goodness. I think you need to post your cabinets so you can get better help.

A picture would help, but I think you'd only compound the problem by painting over a stained painted finish. Why did the white paint look terrible?

uh, you can't stain over paint, and it will depend on whether you have used oil or water based products. I suspect in any case you'll need to strip them down, sand, reprime, and start again.

You’d be miles ahead of the months of work needed to just replace them with IKEA.

You can order new doors and drawer fronts and install them yourself. It might be easier.

Strip, and START OVER. My guess is they looked terrible as you had no prep work on them to start. Don't add more paint to the problem

The prep to paint cabinets is a ton of work and if you have never painted cabinets I would say go to the idea of new doors and drawer fronts since now you will need to strip all the way down to the bare wood sand until smooth then start over with the proper paint ideally a dust free garage to spary the doors and drawer fronts. Poorly painted cabinets look horrible and to have them painted professionaly is very expensive and IMO not worth the money unless you love everything about the kitchen except the cabinet color.

Without seeing what the current condition of the cabinets is I'd have to say strip them and start over. I've seen glazes added to painted cabinetry but not a wood stain. Stripping them will be no small task but it can be done. Good luck!

There is a reason a high quality kitchen paint job is not cheap.

My kitchen disaster... We bought a post & beam unfinished home. And when I say unfinished..?not was built in the late 60s, and the old guy just never finished... Anything. None of the water or sewer pipes had Ben glued together. Very little of the plaster was taped. The concrete slab was tough and uneven, even tho it was nearly 300mm thick with enough rebar to build a bridge. The cedar siding had not been oiled in at least 30 years and...there was a surprise under each and every board we removed.

My wife and I got Angkor deal and we made the place liveable. She scrubbed, sanitized and cleaned up during and after my messy work days and things were coming along well. Out last major task was the kitchen.mwenhad given ourselves 9 months to get the feel of the house before finalising the plans, decided in a Kaboodle kitchen from Bunnings and has them assist with the design. I liked up experienced people to tackle this showpiece and placed and paid for our order. And we were just thrilled when the truck arrived with our boxes.

We know the remodel would be a challenge. The 3m X 4m Kutcher had no square walls and it seemed each 4x2 stud at least stuck out or was recessed at lease 2mm from the one next to it. And from floor to ceiling there was a distinct 2 to 5mm difference in plumb. The Bunnings designer had taken the anomalies into consideration, so we were ready.

Gary, our experienced installer, showed up on Monday and spend a good part of the day making lines on walls, leveling and showing me how to properly assemble the cabinets. I would be his helper, and we looked forward to a smooth job. Tuesday he began setting the carcasses into place as a cold rain poured outside. At about 2pm he received an urgent call. An elderly (way older then me) has a major leak and needed urgent attention. As we country folk often do, we sent Gary off to see if he could help her. My wife jokingly told Gary to STAY OFF LADDERS in this rain.

With our small house filled with kitchen cabinets ready for Wednesday I received a very late 10:30pm phone call from Gary's wife at hospital. As Gary began climbing a ladder to put a tarp over the elderly womans's leak that ladder had slipped. Gary was in ICU with 6 broken ribs and 3 cracked vertebrae. She didn't think he would be able to help me further with the kitchen for "a few months".

We found an old carpenter friend just getting bàcknto work after a heart attack. He was festive as he arrived early Thursday morning. But as the day progressed he was growing fixable ills coughing, sneezing, hacking and sweating. When he finally left at about 2pm it was painfully obvious he was in no condition to do a Kaboodle installation. Our little house was packed floor to ceiling with cabinets and Cheryl and I were just shut down and in shock.

I've had a number of heart attacks, numerous lung and stomach ailments and was scheduled for yet another round of medical tests and operations. But I just couldn't face leaving my poor wife in this fiasco. So with absolute resolve I decided to test Kaboodle and Bunnings..? And to find out if their instructions and videos could possible help me do something I had never, ever even considered doing.

Over the next three days I read every scrap of paper from every one of the 45 boxes, then repeatedly watched each and every Bunnings and Kaboodle video on YouTube.

I've taken my time, bought a few necessary tools and made a few missteps along the way. But today I will finish attaching the timber benchtop joints together and attach them into their final home. The rest of the week will be spent applying the polyurethane coating, 1qmaking a few final door adjustments and, with a bit of luck, attach the kickboards. AND OUR NEW KITCHEN WILL BE INSTALLED.

I HAVE to thank Gary and Neil for checking my progress and offering advice. The Bunnings kitchen experts have been champions. But my wife, Cheryl, really deserves the glory here. She has lived in HORRIBLE conditions, cooked in a microwave, did dishes in the shower, encourage mez praised me, and kicked me a few times when I thought I just couldn't do any more.

Her new kitchen is almost completed, and SHE is the reason this FIASCO has turned out so well. Thank you my dear.
