Insects killing Trumpet Plant?

Today, my neighbor asked me to look at her trumpet plant because it was lush 2 weeks ago and now has spots and chew-looking marks on the leaves. I inspected the plant and did not notice any insects above or underneath the leaves. I sprayed the plant with soap and water, applied coffee grounds at the base, and what ever leaves I touched came off easily.

Looks like a leaf fungus, not uncommon this time of year, and root rot. I'd suggest taking cuttings and trying to grow a new plant. Mine are perfectly healthy, but they're dropping a lot of leaves from the main plant, and at the same time, putting out new root shoots that are green and healthy. They will drop almost all their leaves as the weather changes, but then put out new growth. Stop fertilizing it and cut back on watering. Not sure about the coffee grounds, as fungus will grow on coffee grounds easily, so it may make things worse.

The leaf spotting is similar to Septoria leaf spot disease ( a fungal infection). The holes are from some chewing insect; some of these feed only at night.

The hole edges look scarred over, not fresh. I suspect whatever did that is gone now.

Thanks, Mandy, but there are a lot of people who know more about growing brugs than I do. I do know a lot about KILLING them, because I've killed quite a few before I learned more here about how to grow them. ;)

I have found, consistently, that the eating 1) does not affect the brugmansias' health; 2) is occasional; 3) never defoliates.
