If I'm in California and I don't like the guests visiting, I get them a room with a view in the Tenderloin in San Francisco. There are needles, garbage and dirty laundry everywhere.

If they are coming from High Gate and need a place to stay because they are having their house fumigated, I have them walk through Hampstead Heath and work their way to La Gaffe where they will stay in the smallest rooms in all of human history. But well worth the experience. In 1972, Micky Dolenz, the monkey, was brushing his teeth in his room at La Gaffe and accidentally bumped his fiance out the window. The rooms are THAT small.

I think you are trying to shame me with the photo in the OP.

The answer is "it depends." In my mom's later years, she was in a wheelchair and couldn't get into my decidedly non-accessible house, so she stayed in a hotel. My budget-minded brother and SIL sleep on an air mattress in my LR (San Francisco Bay Area; can't afford a house with a guest bedroom). My friend Judy is allergic to cats, so she stays with another friend.

A hotel or vacation rental. I don't like for people to stay with me.

I pay for them to stay ta a local B&B. My house is super small and my family is large. And I too live in the SFBay, so even a 5* hotel is cheaper than a guest room ;-)

I have overnight visitors (all family) about twice a year. They stay with us. No one else.

We live under ten minutes from the airport. Occasionally my son and family, or a niece will stay the night if they have a early flight the next day.

EVERYONE stays with me! I cook and clean like a mad lady.

Son and two teens / for 3 weeks every summer / we pay for airfare and rental house / they have use of a car. ALL of us enjoy spending time together but, also prefer having "down time" too.

Even when I lived in San Francisco, I had guests stay with me when they came to visit, and I still do. In the late 1970s in SF I had a guest room that doubled as my sewing room, and I also had a guest room at the last place I lived in SF until 1984. In between I did not have a guest room, but I still had guests stay with me.

I'm not crazy about having my BIL visit, but I tolerate him, since he does not stay for more than three days.

When I visited friends in Mexico City, I was given a suite on the roof of their house in Polanco and was told I could stay as long as I wanted, and I often stayed for a month, although I did make short trips to other areas of Mexico. Similarly, I had friends in Vancouver who wanted me to stay with them for an entire month, and we had lots of fun together.

If your guests (or you) stink in three days, then you have the wrong guests. BTW, I hate Judge Judy and would never allow her anywhere near me. A friend of mine was asked to be on her show and he absolutely refused. JJ is just mean.

We don't have visitors often. Once a year tops. It is always family and they stay with us.

They stay with us. We have a small cottage style home with a guest bed and bath away from our bedroom.

We live in a 4 bedroom house, and it's just me and my husband. We have plenty of space for guests. We have one guestroom with a double bed, another guest room with a twin bed, a futon in the basement that sleeps two, and several blow up mattresses.

My apt is small. So usually family 1-4 will sleep on sofa bed, which has an air mattress so very comfortable or a blow up bed. The best response so far is photo of the tub!

When we built our retirement home we designed it with separate “us” and “them” wings. The two bedroom, bath guest wing has a pocket door with transom window to ensure privacy yet the window allows them to see if my husband or I have turned on the lights in the living areas. We love having company!

We now live in a popular tourist area so we have guests pretty regularly. We bought this place because it has a detached garage with a guest apartment above. It is regularly occupied. In the main house we also have a guest room upstairs that has 2 queen beds and it’s own bath, so that gets a lot of use as well.

My husband and I live in a four bedroom/two bath house. We have a guest room with a queen bed and my office with a twin daybed. Guests always stay with us; why would we invite guests to stay with us and NOT have them stay in our house with us?! I can tolerate having to share my bathroom with guests for a few days! (my bathroom has a heated toilet seat!) We are downsizing in one year and will still have a guest room; it may be small, but we enjoy having guests!

Never had room for quests before, but now that my son is out of the house, I have a whole upstairs quest room/bath I'm working on for future quests! Still bare bones!

We have a guest bedroom and bath. For me, guests having their own bath is key. I feel that way whether I'm the hostess or a guest. Depending on the situation, when we're away from home we often get a hotel room. There's just something about having your own space and some privacy.

We have guests frequently, both friends and family. Once a year we even have our book club (3 couples) come for a long weekend! We have a fairly large home, but to accommodate multiple guests we recently added a wall/door to divide a an extremely large guest room into a guest suite. This allows our guests to have a queen bed in one part of the suite and a sleeper couch, TV and table in the other part. Each part has access to the hallway, so we can sleep either two couples privately or our daughter and her 2 small children. Extra people sleep on an air bed in one of our offices. It works great and people enjoy visiting!

Friends are welcome to stay at our house, with our cats, and if they don't like that, then there's a Days Inn nearby. Usually they stay with us, though, and no one's gone to the Days Inn. Family... ? NOPE. My family was not at all functional, and they wouldn't be welcome.

We live in Mexico so although our main house has 3 bedrooms, we have a lovey casita with it’s own living room and kitchen plus bath, bedroom and porch overlooking the pool and we also have a luxurious master bedroom rooftop casita upstairs with its’ private entrance, lookouts, porches and a kitchenette. Our guests get a choice where they would like to stay and the roof retreat is the favorite! We find this gives our guests extra privacy on their vacation and it gives us our privacy as well!

We have a lakeside house which means company all summer long. We have had as many as 20 here at Christmas all at together. We fondly refer to our house as a B&B&D. Bed, breakfast and dinner. All for free for the guests. Lots of sheets, towels, laundry and groceries for us!!

We had a large house but not many guests. We have moved to a two bedroom on a small lake. Guests stay with us, at my daughters house or at a hotel depending on how many are visiting. We chose not to keep the big house for an occasional guest.

We have recently gained a guest bedroom and a studio . . . since the twins moved out.

Rarely have overnight guests, so I decided it was much cheaper to put them up in a hotel than the extra cost for a bigger condo with a nice guest room. Of course, it helps that there are probably 20 hotels within a short walk!
