I saw that online somewhere. Will it give enough ambient light so people have enough light to eat at the bar? The beam isn't really over the bar...might be hard to tell from pic.

Yes but is that power on the bottom of that beam. Any battery light may or may not give good light, you will probably go through batteries like mad. Read the reviews on the site they seem to have good ones.

I think I'd rather run a cord up the wall and over, to hang a swag light, than have to pull down a puck to change the batteries once a week!

Have you looked in those circles that is usally what is done when there is poer in there since it can’t be permantely covered.

and build a very sleek minimalist design linear lamp shade that will house the lights. I will hang it from the ceiling with wire so I can get the lights closer to the bar. We'll see when I get the lights tomorrow!

Is that a light switch on the wall to the right before you walk out the patio doors? and/or is there an electrical outlet anywhere near the bar: If so, you can fake a vertical "beam" -- hollow raised place that mimics the boxing on the ceiling already to put an electrical plug at the top of the wall and plug in a light there.

Once you get electricity to ceiling level, there are lights with chains of different lengths to put light where you want it.

@suezbell Hi. It's a light switch on the wall. There is an outlet on the wall to the right but closer to where the person that took the photo is standing. Kind of across from the drawer on the right. I clicked your link but the photos aren't loading! I get a box with a ? inside.

If you do go with battery powered lights, choose LED -- they'll last longer.

One idea you might consider is solar battery powered lighting or other rechargeable batteries rather than having to buy batteries all the time.

By hanging a wrought iron bracket on your wall or hanging hooks from your ceiling by/over the bar, you could create a solar rechargeable light you could move to hang on the bracket as needed. You could use long BBQ tongs to lift the light you buy and/or create onto the hooks or brackets.

You could create your own floor lamp with a post and christmas tree stand and solar light(s) you could set in the sun by the patio doors and move it to beside the bar area as needed.

OH you have a half hot switch, yes you can swag a light from there but do it without the chain and use wire molding to keep it sleek, I can explain if needed, but you do have power nearby, there is also a chance you could move it as well.

First lets clarify, do any of the switches on that panel by the door control the power to the outlet in question? Second, can you post a picture of where the plug is in relation to the island where you want the light so I can see how it can be done and if we need a roller switch on the cord itself?

The switches on the wall are all spoken for, they control overhead lights in the kitchen and outside lights. I'm not at the house right now (it's a rental) but the location of the power outlet is on the wall above the kitchen counter. If you look at the pic, you'll notice there is a top drawer in the foreground on the right. If you imagine yourself standing there (facing the bar), the outlet would be to your right on the wall above the counter.

Well, in that case, it may not be optimal to use since that would take away a counter plug for the renters and we all know that plugs are crucial in a kitchen. or is it a vacation rental?

You need a good electrician who is a good handyman as well, they have to daisy chain the furthest to the first.

Hopefully, he is the crafty kind and understands how to put the two side by side of the same plug. 2nd that you need to find a ceiling plate or canopy that is slightly deep so it can have a hole drilled in the side for the cord to come out
