Advice about buying bedroom set- matching or no?

Hi, I’m working on buying new master bedroom furniture. I purchased a beige upholstered headboard and now need to purchase 2 dressers and 2 nightstands. I can customize at a local furniture store and have the dressers in one finish/color and the nightstands in another. I’m looking for a soft classic coastal feel with light grey/blue/green walls. So, here are my choices for furniture and one of the dressers. I love the Natural stain. I prefer stain vs paint but am open.

Any designers out there who can advise whether I should buy the dressers in Natural and nightstands in a darker color (blue or espresso)? Would that be too much contrast with the walls and headboard or is that good? Or should I just get the same Natural on all?

Also happy to have non-pro advice and pics too!! ;) Thank you!!

My vote is Natural on all. Add color to the room with paintings, bedding and pillows instead. PS- try Benjamin Moore Sea Salt for the walls.

Thanks Cara! I was leaning toward that!

I might get the big dresser and 2 nightstands in Natural and then the smaller dresser in a different/darker stain since it will be in a little nook in the bedroom. Here’s the floor plan. I decided on a 38” chest for that spot. And a chair next to it!

What do you think of that plan?

Oh and I definitely will check out sea salt. Any other paint suggestions? Leaning slightly more blue-grey vs green? Thx!!

Hi, I would go with blue dressers and natural night stands. That way it would look like you collected pieces over time not just all at once from a furniture store. More interesting that way.

Matching furniture is very out and I wouldn't do it. You need different nightstands and a different dresser with different textures. For a coastal feel, how about a light color or white dresser and maybe raffia, grasscloth, or rattan nightstands.

IMO the bed is one very specific style and the dresser not close and I certainly would not do painted dressers or night tables with such an elegant bed. I alsio don’t Tommay Bahama with that bed. Those little tiny drawers in the dresser will make you crazy they hold nothingMaybe something like this for the bed.Gives a bit of beachy feel

Thanks all! I appreciate the ideas!

Patricia, is that a 2-tone nightstand? It’s hard to tell in the pic.. but is it darker on top and lighter (whitewashed on the base)? I can do any finish on this furniture and they can also customize size so I’ll see if they can do a bigger nightstand. We have a little bit more room. Also, they can do louvered doors under a drawer too which might add to the coastal-ness ;) Thoughts? Thanks!!

Design girl, how about the Natural for the dresser? Here it is in table (next to blue bench). Thanks!

Also, here is the floor plan which didn’t attach earlier for some reason..

I don’t see the smaller dresser working, at least from the way it looks on your plan. Another upholstery piece (different from bed) with ottoman and side table in that area feels better to me

I think the natural color is fine, but am unsure if it will read too casual next to your bed which it seems is a bit formal.

I would do the nightstands in a different style from the dressers. The nightstands in your original bed picture look great with the bed. Something with texture would also be nice like this:

And it would still look nice with your natural dressers.

I’ll respond more later but this is my favorite inspiration photo ;)

Thanks IdaClaire! I tend to agree that it’s really what someone likes. I would love my room to look amazing but really I’m the only one who will care or typically see it! My husband too of course but he really doesn’t care..

I went tonight to the store and have even more options! I’ll see if I can post some tomorrow! Thx!

Thanks ldecor, design girl, and Stacy!! I really appreciate the help and input!

Ldecor, there is definitely enough room there. Furniture is in orange do you can see where I’d like a small dresser.. when we get our shorter window in!

Design girl, good point! I’m hoping it is a nice balance which is what I am trying for. Not too much of anything!

And Stacy, I’m trying to look and find something that I like for the space! Thx!

Hi all, so here’s a different set. I think I like the detail on the sides and feet. My husband likes the Tobacco stain (see pic) for his smaller dresser but I think it’s too dark. Maybe the lighter grey color called Slate. For our nightstands, they can make them larger which we need for sure! They can also customize. Maybe louvered cabinet doors under a drawer?

Also here’s a nightstand (white) that I love but it’s too big and won’t fit. Bummer!

    Thanks for any advice!

I like you inspiration photo very much and I think that coloring is better than what your'e showing in the above photos. I would like something in the natural tones. Is it possible to get some nightstands that have 2 drawers and an open bottom like in Patricia Colwells photo above. That gives a more open feel which I think looks better. IMO you don't want dresser after dresser all over the room. I would give you storage, but with a lighter feel.

Thanks Design girl! Yea, I don’t love the dark either..

Yes, they can customize nightstands to be wider and be open on the bottom. Sorta like this (but wider).

So, all in Natural? Oh and I forgot this was my favorite nightstand but too big :(

Yes, I'd do the one with the open bottom and wider in natural for the nightstands, if you can't find another texture. Serena and Lily has a lovely nightstand with a caned bottom that would add texture and a beachy feel. It can be gotten in a natural finish. Here's the link, as my photos don't seem to want to load. They regularly offer 20 % off. https://www.serenaandlily.com/harbour-cane-nightstand/m11477.html?color=White#start=21 These are something I may get for my bedroom, as I have an upholstered headboard as well, but mine is more simple. The other pieces can also be in natural, but I might go for some form of a white painted finish too. That will be complimentary with the bed, while not being matchy matchy which isn't really popular these days.

Thanks Design girl. I like that nightstand but would like a bit more storage. I’ll see what I can find.

Would it help to get a different headboard? I can always put the one I bought into our guest room.

    Thanks!

I think the headboard is lovely. I chose not to get tufting as I didn't want to clean dust out of the buttons. I'm lazy now. Your headboard is a bit dressy, but can still work just fine. I think the optimal nightstand would be something along the lines of the picture Patricia Colwell posted above that I mentioned. 2 nice size draws and an open bottom. I've actually been looking for something like that myself, and am having a hard time finding it. How much room do you have on each side of the bed, .i.e., what size bedside table?

Yes, I agree, love that one from Patricia! I’ve been looking too. I’ll see if the company can customize that much ;)

What about 1 drawer on top and louvered doors on bottom? That might help lighten it up.

We have 13’ from our window to the wall. So basically less than 3’ nightstands with out king bed. I’m thinking 30” wide would be perfect. Does that make sense?

Maybe like this with louvered doors...?

I also found this one with 2 drawers but totally different style...

    This is hard!

Yes, 30 inch makes sense. I was looking at this one but didn't want a marble top as I have a marble on my dresser. https://www.frontgate.com/etienne-nightstand/indoor-furniture/bedroom-furnishings-storage/nightstands-bedside-tables/812179?listIndex=1 This one is also nice. https://www.onekingslane.com/p/4725113-weathered-2-drawer-dresser-oak.do?refType=&from=Search - I'm not sure the louvered bottoms would do the trick. It would look less like another dresser, so that's better than just all drawers. I do think the open bottom is better.

Design Girl, those are great! A little too antiquey for my husband.. but very nice.

So I found these... I know not open on the bottom but I really like the color. Not grey and not white but still light and beachy feeling. What do you think?

This too... maybe with a basket on the shelf?

I do love the coloring of those pieces. I personally do not like the matchy matchy look of a set of furniture and prefer a more eclectic look. IMO, the nightstands would look nice next to the bed, but I might pick a different piece for your larger dresser. I have a Williams Sonoma bamboo dresser in white opposite my upholstered headboard - I found the dresser at the outlet store at a good price. https://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/hampstead-long-dresser/? dresserpkey=cnightstands-dressers&isx=0.0.7440 The actual dresser looks much nicer than the photo. So I have the white headboard with the white dresser directly across and am wanting to get a different medium for the nightstands and another for a higher chest of drawers. I'm thinking of using the color you posted above for my chest, and a faux raffia or linen nightstands for some texture. I'm looking at the Jarin nighstands from Made Goods. I also like something like this, but it's low price makes me suspect it may not be very well made. https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/washed-wood-nightstand?category=furniture-nightstands&color=014&quantity=1&size=One%20Size&type=STANDARD - I find it a frustrating process at best, as I am having trouble finding what I want.

Funny you should post that piece from Anthropologie... I found it the other day and loved it especially the blue!

So, I too don’t want too matchy but my issue is I don’t want white painted or grey or too dark..! Which doesn’t leave a lot of options. And finding the right pieces that ‘go’ is really hard. So.. one option is getting the lighter nightstands and darker stain dresser. See photo. What do you think?

    Omg how gorgeous is this?

I like the large dresser above, but I still think that getting pieces that look the same, with a different stain could be even worse than matchy matchy. I got my large dresser first, as for me, it was the hardest to find. Now I'm working on the nightstands and a tall chest for my husband. I'm looking at some nightstands that have faux linen, or faux raffia to add a bit of texture to introduce a different medium. I have some pictures, but I can't get anything to upload on this site. The photo goes gray and then never loads. I'm taking them off my phone, transferring to my mac, and then they won't load. Any thoughts?

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>DG, I have had problems loading photos too! Frustrating. Thank you so much for all your help!

I don’t know if I have the energy to keep looking. I’m not that patient!

    I get it - it's exhausting.

Maybe I’ll take a break and come back to it in a few days. We are getting landscaping done so lots of decisions! I just need a vacation ;)

Here’s a closeup of the wood for that dresser. I’m thinking possibly getting this dresser and these nightstands (with baskets on shelf). Although they are in the same family (same finish), they don’t look too much alike. And then I’ll find a totally different chest for hubby.

Would that work? Maybe not ‘designer’ ready but honestly no one sees our bedroom except us!!

Yes, I think that would be lovely. The shelf with the basket will open things up. I still can't post my photos. I hear there is a problem with the site, but it's probably because I'm technically challenged.

Ok cool! I’ll see what the color looks like first. I ordered samples! I also found these for a chest for hubs. A little small but I really like them.

    Thoughts?

They are really nice. Will add a little dimension which is always good.

With blue/gray walls, you don't want white or blue or gray furniture.

Choose a medium wood finish for all the pieces and focus on ensuring each piece has a lot of storage capacity -- later you'll be glad you did. Budget permitting, choose actual wood rather than veneer so you'll have furnishings that will stand the test of time. Avoid ornate pieces. Amish wood furnishings are well worth considering.

For lamps, choose thin metal posts and medium white shades -- leave room for other items on you bedside cabinet/stand such as tissues, phone, book, etc. How tall depends upon what is comfortable for you to use for the purposes intended. For instance, will they be a comfortable height for reading in bed -- if you do that.

Put a full length mirror on a bathroom or closet or bedroom door so you can choose a tall (five drawer) chest of drawers rather than a short dresser with large mirror to maximize the storage space with minimum "footprint" -- minimum floor space..

Of the drawer finish options shown, I like the top row far left one and the second row third from left one.

Suezbell - these suggestions don't seem to reflect the beachy feeling OP wants to have. IMO wood upon wood upon wood and metal are so heavy feeling. Drawer upon drawer upon drawer gives no visual relief and starts to look like a furniture showroom full of dressers.

Design Girl : Totally valid point.

All that "whitewashed" stuff, though, seems "tired" and gives of fmore of a refurbished thrift store vibe than something OP will be glad OP purchased in the future. Too much gray can give more of a commercial vibe than a beach vibe.

Rattan and/or wicker with an unpainted ( wood look ) finish could give something more akin to the substantial look of wood but with more of a beach vibe.

    https://americanrattan.com/product-category/rattan-bedroom/bedroom-sets/

On the other hand, anything painted any color can be repainted later. Who knows, next year OP may want a black and white room or hot pink.

Edited: The metal lamp posts are usually thinner, leaving more room for other things. Have seen thin painted wood ones, too, though.

suezbell - I agree with the rattan, but OP doesn't seem fond of that. Her tufted headboard is also a bit dressier IMO, which the rattan doesn't meld well with. It's hard to balance the elements of a beachy vibe with a dressier headboard and heavier furniture pieces with no relief. It's tricky for sure. I have some interesting photos but can't seem to upload. Maybe later.

Thank you so much Suezbell and Design Girl. I really appreciate the help and opinions!

    I don’t really have a style (I guess it’s casual coastal?) however I can tell you what I don’t like.... ;)
    -anything too trendy (current grey)
-painted furniture (looks nice but I prefer stain to see the wood grain)
-anything too much a theme (eg, beachy... don’t get more wrong, I love a coastal vibe but not a beach theme..make sense?)
-too much white and no color or warmth of wood
    -not modern/contemporary but not traditional

So hope that helps and makes sense!

Bottom line is I would prefer a non matchy look but not too eclectic either. That’s why I got an upholstered headboard (vs wood part of a set). But I figured I could do different colors/stains on the nightstands vs dressers.

So now I’m to the point I think I have a plan to hopefully get than casual coastal vibe, warm wood stain but not too dark to keep it coastal. And a bit of fun in a chest of drawers. And Suezbell, great idea about maximizing storage and the wall mirror! That’s my plan :)

    Again thank you!!!
