kitchen/dining design mid century modern / farmhouse

Hi,

Hubby and I purchased an L-shaped ranch house, 1000 sq ft. Got it under market value for updates in St. Albert, Alberta.

We want to go for a mid century modern or farmhouse feel, white cabinets, a peninsula kitchen, and no apron sink. The closets next to the dining area will be removed. Ideas? Not sure what to do with the floor. Vinyl plank maybe.

Pics are not of our things. Pics are from seller’s listing. Possession is next week.

Thanks for inspiration and help!

I'm not a pro, but here are a few Houzz photos for inspiration. You might be able to make things look good while keeping the current flooring. Another option would be a checkerboard floor, a look that I love and believe would go great with both MCM and farmhouse. Wood or wood-look vinyl plank would also be options to consider.

New light fixtures ....change the cab hardware. Better window treatment w a print...botanical. Get a hi arc sink faucet. What is the reason to tear out a closet that is fairly inconspicuous? What is the reason to paint light wood cabinets? A bit tight to open fridge.....go get a French door new fridge . It'll be a nice upgrade rather than closet demolition and painting cabs

Herbflavor — botonical window treatments may be nice! The closet is being removed because it closes in the front entrance door on the other side of it. We are opening it up. Brown cabinets are out where I live. We want stainless Steele appliances. French doors are a great idea! I like the black granite composite sinks. Would that, with a high arch sink faucet go well with the style we are trying to achieve?

Elaine — thank you! Those pics are gorgeous. Something that I love is the stainless cart. Going to show that to hubby.

You don't have brown cabinets . Anyway light wood and generally wood cabs are on the up and white cabinets are not really trending around here. If there were a reason to paint other than the futile mission of following in/out then the time/ expense should be considered.

mid-century+farmhouse style actually sounds like a 1940s kitchen to me. Retro Renovation had a series on 1940s kitchens a while back. To me, this style is marmoleum floors, white slab cabinet fronts, white appliances. Here's a link for inspiration... https://retrorenovation.com/tag/1940s-kitchen-design-board/

Like anytime you move into a new space wait until you have lived there for a while before doing anything major .You are putting the cart before the horse here . First thing is the bones , electrical, plumbing heating, cooloing all those need to be addressed before the pretty stuff. I see a huge need for lighting in the kitchen you need to decide what style you love and then make a plan. I certaily do not think MCM is a 1940s kitchen but I happen to love MCM that kitchen is a long way from it. Take your time to do it right .

I think your cabinets are beautiful and no need to redo/replace. Do you really not like them or are you just worried that they are not the current style? I suggest starting with new appliances in stainless, new light fixtures, do away with those curtains and take another look. Maybe a new counter top and floor would be the best replacement choices, other than appliances. The frig sure is the elephant in the room!

"We want to go for a mid century modern or farmhouse feel"

Those two design aesthetics are not the same, or even similar. They are buzzwords of popular looks right now, that have lost meaning through repetition. You need to pick one of them, or perhaps you are looking for something else. Your rejection of an apron-front sink says you actually do not want a farmhouse kitchen look (have you see the stainless steel apron front sinks? They're a bit more modern take on the apron front sink, and an easier installation too).

I think you need to decide more what you like. Don't do anything until you've looked online and on Houzz at kitchens, and save the photos that appeal to you. You could do a search for "farmhouse kitchens", and draw inspiration from those photos. A pattern will emerge, so that you can make better choices to have the kitchen you really want.

I think your cabinets look nice and new, and quality wood is timeless (yours isn’t that orangey oak)— but I can’t tell if yours are solid wood or veneer. Changing out the counters and backsplash and floor would be my choice, and working with the cabinets. I also like white kitchens and MCM style, but just moved into a house with beautiful natural cherry cabinets, and love them.

MCM would be slab cabinets, could be white or light colored wood. I love that look. That said, your cabinet color and floor would go very well with MCM furniture. I can see a white tulip table in there.

My decorator had a horror of "matchy matchy". We were installing shaker style cabinets and she couldn't understand why I'd even consider getting rid of my beautiful country style oak harvest table. She was right. A mix of styles gives some life to a space.

I echo the advice to live with the kitchen for awhile, making only minor upgrades. New appliances, definitely. To make that kitchen midcentury modern, you’re going to have to gut all but the floor, IMHO. The cab color can go midcentury, but the raised panel leans farmhouse. If you’re picking, I go farmhouse.

Those look like solid maple cabinets which are right on trend now — the trend may not have reached everywhere, but it is coming. That said, white kitchens will probably never go entirely. (I just installed one.) But if those cabinets were mine, I would not touch them other than to upgrade hardware. Painting them will be dreadfully expensive if done right. If it is done wrong, you will have ruined some lovely cabinets.

The window treatment is sad, and that floor tile on the backsplash is a mortal wound to my eye. Your money might be better invested in ripping it out, probably taking the countertops with it. I would go with a really neutral white quartz, and something bright and interesting for the backsplash — all the way around the window and to the ceiling. I would prefer a white Kohler farmhouse sink myself — and it will get you closer to the look. But a thick-rimmed drop in Kohler cast-iron sink would work, too. Kohler has some fascinating special order colors (that are priced accordingly) and you might echo that color in your backsplash. Or go with soapstone or Virginia Mist and a white drop in sink. Black and white checkerboard floor would look cool with that.

I like your brick wall, but I would redo it so that some of the brick shows, maybe. I am not a fan of the floor tile because it is so dark, but you’ve got a lot of it and replacement will be expensive. I think you can work with it. Good luck. This looks like an exciting project.

Live in it for 6 mos. to a year and see how it functions for you. Then you'll know exactly what to change and how you want it done. Function before form they say! Start ideabooks here on Houzz with looks and concepts you like. Then when you're ready to enlist the folks who'll get it done for you, there are plenty of pix to show them where you'd like to go with it.

If you remove the closet and "open up" the entrance area, won't the front door then just open up into the dining area? Or are you keeping the wall in the dining area and just removing the closet?

I don't see MCM here unless you're planning to gut the kitchen or reface the cabinets. I agree with those who say wait 6 months or so before making major changes.

Differentiate Mid Century Modern from plain Mid Century. If you still want to go MCM, you probably need to abandon the "farmhouse" side of things. The two are really not compatible.

If you're thinking more of a vintage/farmhouse mash-up, that's much more do-able. The above suggestion about 40's kitchens is a direction to go. There are others.

Define more specifically what you'd like to do.

LET THE CURTAINS HANG STRAIGHT!!!! They could be wider as well. Taking them to the ceiling will give a different feel to the space.

    Thanks for the ideas everyone.

Appliances — definitely going stainless steel. Considering getting a fridge that only comes out as far as the counter, so it’s not protruding as the current one is.

Cupboards — does the height of the cupboards make it look dated? I note that all of the modern homes, with various design styles, have cupboards up to the ceiling, as high as they can go. My husband wanted me to ask about this and get some opinions. As for the colour, we are probably not going to paint the cupboards immediately, but it is a goal in the long term. Waiting can be a good idea, but there is something to be said about looking at a space objectively as well. I’m not a huge fan of brown cupboards (even light like this), and we like white/grey cupboards. Also, all that I have heard from experts in our area is that wood colored cupboards are not in, and it’s recommended to change the colour. However, I can see that some people here are saying the maple colour is fine so it seems it may be worth looking into more! We will be doing a lot of the work before moving in as we have small children and are doing a lot of the work ourselves. So that’s another reason we are remodeling before moving in.

Closet removal — We are creating an open concept home where you walk into the dining room and living room. Currently the closet you can see in the OP ends where the entrance hall closet is. The entrance door is in line with the brick wall. On the other side of the brick wall is the living room wall, which we will shorten up to the door as well. The house is quite small and removing those is sort of necessary because currently you walk into an awkward hallway that has no focal point and feel sad and closed in. Everyone who has walked into our front door has said those need to go lol.

Retro style — not really into a 40s style. It’s cute but it’s not really us.

Leaning towards modern farmhouse style. Though we disagree that you can’t marry farmhouse and MCM. We’re not looking to have a perfect example a style in our home, but to replicate in majority the look and spirit of the style. While we aren’t into an apron sink in our own house, we do like a deeper top-mount white enamel cast iron sink that was recommended by MizLizzie. Those Kohler sinks are beautiful and actually make me feel really excited. Couldn’t we have farmhouse as a “backdrop” and have chairs and accents that are MCM?

The backsplash definitely MUST to go. We hate that the previous owner put floor tiles as a backsplash. We like natural stone because of the depth it has, I don’t find quartz has that. We may just get the backsplash as lip coming up from the counter, and then put a stone backsplash in above the cooking area.

Groveraxle — I love that, what you did to the dining area! You breathed a new life into that area! The light looks so good. I love it!

Take a look at what bloggers "Chris Loves Julia" recently did to the kitchen in their new-to-them house. They moved boxes around and painted. Might be your style. Of particular note is how they raised the cabs toward the ceiling and added a shelf below. The vertical tongue and groove is a solid, affordable backsplash option too. This is by no stretch MC "Modern". they call it modern cottage...

Stainless appliances would kill the retro/vintage look, unless you are going more vintage industrial. That’s just my feeling.

I respectfully disagree with J Williams. Whatever aesthetic a person is going for with their kitchen, you still have to take practicality into account. For example, there are kitchens with a British Victorian look, or rustic-cabin-in-the-mountains look, or Swedish farmhouse, or whatever. They still need modern appliances. If someone from an 1910 home were transported magically into the future, they would be thrilled to have the conveniences of modern appliances. Also, the faux-old-timey-look appliances like the Elmira ones can look affected, and the faux-thing wears thin. Plus Elmira appliances get poor reviews.

Just get the appliances that are in your budget, and function the way you’d like, and don’t worry whether they’ll fit into your farmhouse or MCM look.

If you replace the counters with granite, don't do the little four inch backsplash. THAT would be dated. Do a proper backsplash from the counter to the bottom of the uppers.

The link for Chris Loves Julia didn’t work for me, but I searched their site and found their kitchen. Talk about stunning, but a bit funny that it’s not that practical in some regards (in a video they did on it, they point this out). Just serves as a reminder to make sure our ideas will work before implementing them!
The idea of moving the cupboards up and adding a shelf — I like that a lot. Can we do that with the glass door cupboards though? I imagine it looking weird with two short sides underneath with a little shelf.

All of the pictures I see online of farmhouse style kitchens have stainless, and even so with MCM kitchens. It seems for MCM they draw that vintage feel out with interesting paint colors rather than the appliances. But I’m not that interested in going retro with colours or appliances. I think you can bring MCM in with decor and furnishings. “The enduring popularity of the Mid-Century Modern style is based on many factors. It gave us clean lines, gentle organic curves, a love for different materials and designers that are idolized even today.” Mcm is about exploring new materials and I think stainless works with that anyway. Farmhouse requires functionality, and I think stainless suits it in that way.

I looked up if, in fact, 4” backsplashes are dated. It seems they are (with debate) so we will likely steer clear of that. I think my husband likes the simple, clean line of it.
