Although your furnishings might be an eclectic mix of modern the elements of the architecture within your home are not. The fireplace and moulding and casings all look traditional. For that reason I would keep the banister simple and transitional so that it doesn't look out of place with the architecture of the home. Instead of a traditional spindle do a simple square.

i really like the one in the second picture, i also really like the horizontal vs vertical treatment in the center. My original hope was do do metal posts and horizontal bars, but i think you are right it may be too contemporary. Can i mix wood and horizontal bars? Maybe paint the wood black as you suggest?

don't know, but not necessarily. you can buy some of these pre made and install them, or have someone do it for you.

just look at modern or transitional staircases

With my oak stairs and the stone floor could i do a natural wood banister like maybe a walnut and stain it ebony or would i have to stay in the same wood family. my front door is a natural stained fir, so kind of a warm honey color. You can see a little bit of it in the first picture.
