Is the door on the long side or the short side?

Closet systems are very personal. For example, I have little need for long hanging space, so I prefer double rods. You may need more. I have a chest of drawers in my bedroom, so I don't need drawers in the closet (I do have shelves, however). I don't own a lot of shoes. I keep a laundry basket on the floor of the closet, tucked under the bottom shelf. My DH is tall, so I raised his clothes rod as high as possible - he can still reach the shelf above, and I added shelves below his clothes for more storage that I can reach.

What you need to do is inventory the things you want to put in the closet, and determine the best storage solution for those things. Start with hanging clothes, then shelves and drawers. Consider if you will rotate between seasons, or if all your clothes will be in the closet year-round. If you put together a detailed list of your needs, your closet company should be able to help you determine the best arrangement for you.

Flexibility is critical for me. Our current house had expensive closet organizers. The systems were only slightly reconfigurable. Only one closet worked for us. I have systematically removed them and installed Elfa, so that I can reconfigure as often as I need.
