I seriously doubt the jade is affecting the sewer system at all. Crassula ovata has a very surface oriented root system, adapted to gather as much surface water as possible during the infrequent rainy periods in their desert environment. The only time they might delve deeper into the soil is in search of a water source but since they don't need much and the Bay area likely supplies all it needs - not exactly a desert, drought or no drought - I would not expect that to be the case.

OTOH, tree roots can extend a significant distance away from the tree and will often seek out water sources, depending on species. Even though not in immediate proximity, they are far more likely to be the source of the problem.

Thanks! That's pretty much what I thought, but the spouse talked to the plumber and not me--I would have asked if he were familiar with this particular plant causing issues.

I can see how a non-plant guy might see this very large shrub-like entity and be suspicious!
