I like that idea and think it's quite appropriate to the style and location of your home. Here's a mural in the Lodge at Blue Lakes in Napa for more inspiration.

If you ever get tired of it just paint it away. But for now? Sure! Why not.

I agree with IdaClaire. I think it goes well with the style of your space and would look fabulous there. It is not dated and could look very elegant depending on the rest of your decor.

'Dated' only matters for real estate ads.

When my grandparents built their home in 1984, they had one wall in their family room painted similarly, except it was a beach scene. It had similar colors to your inspiration picture and my way younger self thought it was sooo cool. That mural was still there when my aunt sold the house last year.

I don't know that I'd call it "dated" but I change my mind way too often to commit to something big like that. What if you hired an artist to paint a large canvas for you? That way you can move it around if you get tired of it over your fireplace.

I would keep the focus on the lower stone part of the fireplace by painting that upper portion a dark color. The fireplace is very heavy, and a light painting above would look odd. If you like the nature scene, why not get a beautiful wallpaper to use in a dining area or in a powder room instead.

Great thoughts everyone, thanks for sharing! I think I’ll consider it for the large wall opposite the fireplace. So I should paint the area above the fireplace a dark brown maybe? I do love the idea of the plaster stencil!

Are there any other permanent features around, that have color: flooring, etc.? I don't think I'd choose brown that's dark....but show more of the house.

Everdebz, not really. The wall color is repose grey at 75% and the flooring is a Tuscan beige travertine. I prefer neutrals.

For a background color on the chimney area you might consider a softer warm gray - as if you smooshed all the stone colors together. [I don't have a blur tool handy at the moment, so just squint ;-)

Would suggest framed artwork instead of painting directly on the walls. If you ever sell the artwork can be removed. The painted wall can't and that might be a deal breaker for a potential buyer.
