The base is wide enough on the desk hutch that it is stable. As for the over-the-bed, it reaches the floor. the bed and the wall serve to help hold it in place. No hardware is required to hold either the shelving or hutch to the wall. Moxii has these shelves custom built for dorm rooms and even does the install at certain universities.
