What does that include? Materials, labor, disposal, permits? Is he licensed? Liability Insurance? Workman's comp, if he hires helpers?

I understand that sounds high but he is going to have to remove a window, replace framing, sheath the outside, insulate, and drywall. And, that is all before the finishing work gets going.

What is the exterior siding? The contractor is going to have to find matching siding, remove the trim and enough siding to stagger joints, then replace siding so you can't see that a window was ever in that location. That task can be quite difficult, depending on the material and the quality of preexisting work. You do not want to look at a rectangular box on your exterior wall.

On the inside, he will need to run electrical for a light if the closet is more than 6 sq ft. Then he has to do the framing and drywall for the closet, hang the closet doors, install closet shelves and rods, install door trim and baseboards. Also, that drywall will need taping and three coats of mud, then two coats of paint.

There will be some overlap in tasks so he could be working on the exterior while waiting for mud to dry. Even so, there is a considerable amount of waiting time for mud to be ready to recoat, and then for paint to dry. It might only take a few minutes to put on a coat of mud but if he has to make a trip to your house, add travel time and money.

I change a kitchen sink for that in a day. Geesh.

I can get a kitchen sink with granit countertops for that much.
