I see the vision! I like what you did with the wood insets, too. I think black is a good way to simplify the look for sure!

I too have researched how to update a fireplace. Look into romabio paint. They have some specifically meant for masonry and can color match any brand!

The firebox MUST be surrounded by non-combustible material, so any kind of wood surround is out. Local rules may vary slightly, but you should check with your local Dept. of Building and Safety for the exact requirements and measurements. Failing to abide by the requirements can void your fire insurance, so it IS a big deal. You could reface your fireplace brick with stone, but because the floor is also brick, you need to take that color into consideration as well. Even if you paint the brick, you have to consider flammability.

Was the fireplace mantle and the pieces of wood around it added after the house was built? The light wood doesn't match the dark ceiling beams. If you remove the fireplace's wood boards, you'll have a clean-lined fireplace.

Apple Pie- part of the original build, and I have noticed the diff color too. Not sure what that’s about. Maybe if I try to stain them the same color, it might be better. Felizlady- I was able to get fire approval for this fireplace design in my current home- this fireproof wood surround was painted with special fireproof paint from a place in Europe...so this is my inspiration...

I also think that painting the bricks black would be nice. And removing the wood posts and bar, or at least stain them to match the beams in the ceiling. Leave the wood mantle.
