I assume you are making this a single family home now. My suggestion is get an architect involved to make this transition or it will always look like a duplex trying to be a SFH Your inspiration pic and your house have no thing in common.

Are the front doors facing each other on opposite sides of the porch?

Perhaps you could work toward re-creating the duplex as two distinctly separate residences rather than creating one new entry roof.

Is there a separate driveway on each side of the house for each residence? If not (and lot size and budget and local codes permitting, of course), you might enhance curb appeal and privacy and create less of an apartment vibe and more of a home vibe by recreating the front yard rather than altering the front porch roof. If you do alter the front porch roof, you might add a pair of small forward facing gables at each end of each porch to better define and invite guests into each of the different entrances.

On the back:

You might consider creating a back/side porch or patio for each residence at their other back/side entrance in a way that could help hide or minimize any utility areas, including creating separate corrals for the trash cans and/or designating space for them with the objective of enhancing appearance.

On the front:

You could put a wall --at least a pony wall across the porch (perhaps with lattice above it -- halfway between the two front porch entrances creating two separate and more private front porches.

Cladding the existing front porch posts would make them appear more substantial.

You might consider creating a half circle gravel driveway in front of the house that is parallel to a long straight sidewalk that extends from the far left side of the house to the far right side of the house, which sidewalk could be located at least six or eight feet from the porch creating/leaving a planting area. You could then put a pair of private gravel parking spaces (outlined by landscaping posts) on each side of the building. You could then build a fence and/or create a green fence from each front corner of the building to the side edge of the property to separate the front yard from each side yard. You could outline the separate back yards as well with a with a green fence dividing the back yard and outlining the property lines.

You could create two distinctly separate sidewalks that begin at each front door and then leads to a sidewalk that runs parallel to a half circle driveway and parallel to the front wall of the residence across the front yard.

Suezbell thank you for the comments. The front doors are facing each other on opposite sides of the porch. My thoughts were to get rid of those doors and enclose the porch, move each of the front doors so they are street facing and put in a back door that opens to a patio area. I like the idea of creating separation in both

There are driveways on each side, one that leads to a garage, one that doesn't so the gravel driveway would not be needed. I didn't even think of creating a designated space for the trash bins, so placing a fence or some sort of wall towards the back of the building to conceal them would be a good idea. I like the idea of two forward facing gables as well.
