Fireplace ideas

Looking to redesign my fireplace. I'm looking for a more contemporary design. I hate the anemic looking tile that is currently on the fireplace. I like the position of the couches and location of the TV. (Those couches are being replaced BTW) I'm not sure if I should do something more floor to ceiling like there is currently or just something about halfway up? I'm doing a white macaubus quartzite in my kitchen and wondering how would that look on the fireplace? I know it will be pricey so not sure I would go that route.

Yeah don't mind the furniture. It's all going. That's actually the previous owner's furniture most of it. We've been here a year and are still using that furniture while we do projects around the house. A media wall was next on my list. I never thought of painting the wall next to the fireplace. I'm open to suggestions on the media wall and tying it into the fireplace. Here are pictures of the rest of the living area. Don't mind the kitchen, that is completely being remodeled.

I can’t guess the size of the area, but it looks large. Take the measurements of your fireplace surround...you will probably need more than one slab of the macaubus quartzite, which means that there may be a seam somewhere on the wall. You could do one slab below and one slab above and install a mantel at the level of the seam to hide it. Be sure the two slabs match visually colorwise and the markings are extremely similar in width and movement. All exposed edges must be polished.

The total width of the wall is about 12 feet and the width of the tile is about 5 feet. The tiles are 12x12 and are 5 across.

After doing a quick search, it does seem like I can get a slab big enough without having to seam it. I am liking the accent paint. What color accent would go with white macaubas? I'm still thinking of doing a mantle and displaying a piece of art on and/or above the mantle.

I'm also liking that media wall posted above with the movable doors to cover the TV. That will probably make my short list.

Geez, don't do a marble slab and then plaster a mantle on it!! The cost of a slab or two of bookmatched marble can be $$$$ especially the install.

And again you are not thinking about the room in total.

I don't understand, how am I not thinking of the room in total? White Macaubas is a quartzite and not a marble and I literally just got a suggestion on here to add a mantle to it.

I think I may have found the design. This looks a lot like white macaubas and I like the dark gray contrast. That paint color looks close to Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams. Should I have anything flanking the fireplace? What about the media wall? That wall is about 19 feet wide. Should the media wall span the entire wall?

That example of stone has NO mantel. If you want a mantel, this might be a better way to accomplish that.

What I'm suggesting is that you cannot design the FP wall without a design for the media wall. IMO the narrow horizontal windows need to be considered in your design.

I have asked a couple times for suggestions on the media wall, asked how to tie it into the fireplace, and provided additional pics of the room. I'm not sure how I'm not thinking about the entire room. I like some of the ideas posted above. The wall is about 19 feet long. Some of those ideas look shorter so how would they looked stretched over 19 feet or only covering part of the wall?

I really like this idea. Maybe different materials. It can be done beneath the windows. Not sure how wide to go on the wall.

Here is another fireplace idea I like. I would do it a little smaller scale than this picture but I could match the material above the mantle with the material on the media wall and match the mantle with the shelves on the media center.

Another thought I had is making the media wall the feature wall and painting it a contrasting color vs the fireplace wall. I'm also thinking too of framing the fireplace out instead of having it flush.

What style is the rest of the house? This room seems to have touches of Southwest? If so, and the rest of the house is Southwest-ish, you might want to add hints of that to the fireplace and the media wall.

I'm remodeling the house but my style is contemporary or mid-century modern. I'm in Michigan so it certainly isn't southwest. That tile that's on the fireplace is also on the floor in the foyer and I'd like to replace that as well. The house itself is a cape cod/bungalow.

Something else I'm considering doing in the future after the media wall and fireplace, is reconfiguring the wall with the sliding glass door. This may need to go in another topic, but I never use that slider to access the backyard. There is another slider by the kitchen and another door that is off the mudroom that goes outside. I'm thinking of taking that slider out and putting in a row of tall windows. This would allow me to push the one couch back closer to the wall and make the space wider. I feel I have to keep the couch a certain distance as to not block the entrance. With more window space on that wall, I could get rid of those small transom windows on the media wall. This is more long term ideas.

So I found the design I'm likely going to go with for the media wall. Only modification is eliminating the top shelf in favor of the windows.
