those summer temps are in range of my MI summer temps ... and of no concern ... imo ...

however... this plant can become a reseeding nightmare ... left to its own devices ... kind of a world domination thing ... lol ...

its easily taken care of... if you can ID seedlings ... and kill most of them every spring .... with their very distinctive feathery dill like leaves.. its not hard ...

all that said ... they are a sublime color range.. from the deep blue thru violet ... etc ...

now as to any other variables of your high desert ... i know nothing ... i am only speaking to temps ....so good luck with that ...

and do note.. i garden in sand ... and i never even bothered to water mine after planting ... so i doubt that will be an issue ....

I live in SE UK and my area is always hot, droughty, sunny, except this year as rain has for once soaked my garden. Several plants self seed like mad - Nigella, muscari, acanthus molli, alstroemerias, eryngiums .. are almighty nightmares! Whenever I see Nigella, I have to get rid of them and when I see the seedpods, my heart misses a bit! I'm surprised that people would buy the seeds! Hope you don't live to regret it!

I don't think our 'hot, droughty, sunny' conditions would be considered as such in the High Desert of CA, MYA. And I'm surprised at the 'always'. Nigella self sows on my allotment and I hoe them off if they put themselves somewhere I don't want them. They're surprisingly tough to pull even when small. Their orange roots get a hold hold early. Don't hate those seed pods. You can use the seeds in cooking.

Of course, it's not a patch as compared to what the poster suggests, but heat always has the power to encourage seeds to self sow or roots to go deep. A tiny bit of verbena bonariensis can populate itself and take over in no time. Heat has that magic! Hope the poster has sweet dream and not nightmare.

Oh jeez just when I was getting over the Nigella flashbacks, you go and mention verbena bonariensis! Yes, another nightmare self-sower, along with its cousin V. rigida.

You had self seeding Morning Glory? Never come across that in the U.K. I'm also puzzled as to what old sails and old carpet are about?

I don't think reseeding is much of a problem in Elen's high desert. If you don't want something to grow in desert California, stop watering it, it works even on Bermuda Grass.
That being said, Elen, the season for annuals like Love in a Mist for you is probably now through May, since most don't do well over 100 degrees.
