Winter Trunk Wrap for newly planted maples

Hi,

This spring I ground planted in sunny locations Winter Flame, Mikawa Yatsubusa, Pixie, and Aconitifolium, each of which had been potted for a few years in more sheltered locations. I've never used trunk wrap before but see this mentioned to protect truck from winter sun damage (especially for colored bark maples).

* Is there a right vs. wrong kind of trunk wrap to use? The kinds available at big box store near me is a brown corrugated paper-like roll. Others seem almost a gauze-like white material.

* For newly planted JMs, do you trunk wrap for the first winter only, or... for how many winters?

* How far up the trunk is is sensible to wrap and do you start right at ground level?

Thanks for any input
