Help my favorite egg spatula broke.

last modified: 6 years ago

My eons old Ecko spatula broke. Of course they don't make it anymore. It was my favorite go to spatula for flipping eggs. My other spatulas just don't work as well on eggs. Does anyone have a spatula that they like for flipping eggs? Something that is thiner and flexible, but not too flexible, eggs slide right on and is at a slight angle that they like and can recommend.

I use a metal one like this for flipping fried eggs.

    https://www.amazon.com/Brushed-Slotted-Stainless-Ergonomic-Non-Slip/dp/B07SYLRCLN/ref=sr_1_30?keywords=Egg+spatula&qid=1573777092&sr=8-30

I use silicone spatulas for scrambled eggs.

I use a fish spatula - actually a 'slotted offset' spatula - as well. I have two; one metal like the above and the other red silicone. I probably use the silicone one the most. Also great for flipping pancakes and omelettes!

I have a really wide one that I can flip 2 eggs at once with. I got it from the At Home store. It has a handle that looks like wood but it isn't. I think it is a silicone type of thing. It is my favorite for eggs. Studio Cuisine is the brand.

It is the top row middle with the 5 holes the widest one.

I feel for you function! Ours also broke recently and Dh has been scouting out replacements. (He is the cook). So far, we have bought a few but none seem to be replacements. I feel your pain.

I always keep an eye open at the thrift stores cause mine is REALLY old fashioned! I've found 2 spares that I keep stashed.

I use an Oxo flexible one. My egg pan is my only non-stick pan and prefer to use a non-metal tool with it. The edge of the spatula is nice and thin for getting under the eggs.

I love my ECKO Flint spatulas. I have my mother's, too, they are like gold. No doubt I'll pass them on to my daughters!

I scour the charity shops for them.

I got this thin OXO for turning fried eggs over easy. It works well

I have the one that bluebird has, but I find it to be too thick

They do have them on ebay, for a price!

Before you give up, try Ebay. Over the years, I've found a lot of my favorite discontinued items there.

Thank you all. I never thought to use a fish spatula. I have a metal one but I don't want to use it in my non stick egg pan.

Matt E, that spatula looks promising . I threw it in my cart.

Bluebird. I did see the oxo , but I am on the fence . Good and bad reviews.

Maybe I buy them both and may the best spatula win. Hopefully.

Just glanced into the kitchen. I have the ladle, two slotted spoons, and egg beater, a fork, a solid spatula, and three "regular" spatulas.

I can make a fortune on ebay!

Target has the Oxo flexible spatulas. You could go check them out there. I have one that I’ve had for years and use it on eggs every morning. It is a great spatula.

I have the Oxo spatula also. I think I ordered mine from Amazon. I'm having trouble finding a really good thin-but-wide metal spatula that has no holes to use for cookies, especially for transferring cut-outs to cookie sheets. The rubber spatulas or ones with holes don't slide smoothly and mess up the cookies and offset spatulas aren't wide enough.

Note that there's a difference between silicone and plastic flippers, same with other utensils too. OXO makes both. We won't use any item made of plastic, whether container or utensil, that comes in contact with hot food. Plastic utensils also have a lower heat tolerance than silicone and start to melt at temperatures that can be encountered in a skillet.

We have a silicone flipper, I think it's OXO, and it works fine.

Flippers/turners aren't spatulas. If you're looking for an interesting utensil for use in skillets, saucepans, etc., one that we got and like very much after reading about it in Cooks Illustrated, is the StarPack "spoonula" sold by Amazon. Not for flipping fried eggs, but most useful when making scrambled eggs and so many other things. Yes, it's a spatula with a spoon like indentation to make it more useful.

Mines a silicone kitchenaid one. It's actually a "cookie turner". Or something. And it's pink. Makes it function better. Or at least makes me function better anyway. :)

I don't use a spatula to flip an egg...I use a non stick pan and wrist action.

I have three or four of those Ecko flexible spatulas...they're plastic or nylon, don't know which. Best darned egg turning spatula (for non-stick skillets) that I've ever used. I get panicky when one breaks.

What really P'O's me is that I'm always on the hunt for more of them. I found a handful of them at a rummage sale once---6 or 8 of 'em. Bought several items at that sale and managed to get home without the spatulas. We had hit so many sales that day that neither of us could remember where the sale was. That was 3-4 years ago & I've found only one since...at one of those charity shops (like a Goodwill). Yes, every time I'm in a Goodwill, etc., I head directly to the kitchenwares sections on the hunt for more of them.

Matt, that Mercer spatula looks worth giving a try; I'm going to check to see it they have other styles of spatulas more like the Ecko ones.

This one looks very similar to my favorite Ecko spatulas:

    https://www.amazon.com/Hutzler-3717-2WH-Lopol-Spatula-Turner/dp/B07DLRGXGG/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=nylon+spatula&qid=1573818641&s=home-garden&sr=1-5

I just ordered the Hutzler spatulas...2 of 'em for only $5. Delivery is tomorrow. Can't wait to try them out. Will report back when they get here.

For all the pedants that like to frequent these forums......

" A spatula is a hand-held tool that is used for lifting, flipping, or spreading. Spatulas have a handle that is long enough to keep the holder's hand away from what is being lifted or spread, as well as away from a hot surface. The blade of the spatula is wide and thin. ... Spatulas can also be used to serve food."

Yes, I've seen cooks lift the edge of eggs in a non-stick pan with a spatula, as when folding over an omelet. But that same thin spatula (as most are) isn't useful as a flipper or lifter, I recall the the pan being tilted over a plate to allow the finished omelet cooked with a spatula to slide out.

I think in common usage, a spatula is narrow and looks like something you'd stick into a nearly empty mayo jar to get out what remains. For me, what's referred to as a flipper or maybe something else (it's early) is something of the shape that's used to turn and remove hamburgers from a BBQ, or to turn pancakes and these are different from a spatula. If word usage is different where you live, fine. Or maybe it's different where I am from everywhere else, also fine.

My favorite spatula for eggs is the sole survivor of a stainless steel hanging rack that had several non-stick kitchen tools. It was a gift from DH's office friends when we married 55 years ago. There's no brand name on it. I can't find another spatula like it, where no egg white ever clings to the end.

The working end is perfectly straight across with a 1/4 inch 'angle' on top at the end. I suspect the angle keeps things from clinging. It's black with 'clover' shape holes. It's so flexible that it could be heavy cardboard under the non-stick coating. Rivits attach it to a stainless section and a hard (bakelite?) handle (mostly colorless after so many years).

My scrambled egg spoon is also non-stick, with a flat end that's good for scraping the egg up from the bottom of the pan.

I have 'spatulas' like Elmer describes. One has a stainless 'blade' about an inch wide -- good for spreading butter or mayo on bread. Others are flexible rubber or plastic that I use to scrape out mixing bowls. I think these are all 'spatulas'.

Lindac92, I never acquired the art of flipping without a spatula. I would have eggs on my stove, on me, and running down the front of the oven . Lol. I envy those who can.

I had my daughter get me two of the small ones this week at Aldi. I many times use just a very small skillet and they work great for me. The label calls it a mini turner and it is BPA free, $1.49 each.
