Master Bathroom Reno

Our master bathroom has blue and pink wall tile surrounding the entire bathroom and a light pink/dark pink basketweave tile floor. I'm trying to love the floor but really loathe it. I'd like to paint the floor tile black and then paint the wall tile in a black and white pattern (fitting for our 1936 Georgian colonial) but am afraid we'd lose the basketweave pattern if I painted the floor since it's clay set. My husband loves the basketweave and is willing to keep the floor in it's current state if that's the only way to keep the basketweave. Taking down the wall tile is not an option. The first photo includes the wallpaper which has since been removed. I've included some ideabook pics of what I'm thinking for the wall tile. Does anyone have experience painting floor and/or wall tile like this? I'm also curious about how it wears over time. If it isn't worth it to paint, any ideas on how to learn to love and/or style a pink bathroom?

You have my permission to tear everything out and start over. This bathroom is not worth saving. If a bath remodel is not in the budget right now, live with it until you can afford to redo it. Get a good cleaning service in there to really do a big scrub of all the grout and get someone to patch/paint the ceiling so the bath is at least usable in the meantime. (And I would get a contractor to look at that ceiling. There's clearly a leak and possibly mold up there. Find out the root cause of that stain and get it fixed first. It could be a health hazard.)

You can recreate a basketweave floor with new tile. There seems to a significant amount of mold in your ceiling and that would be a fair reason to explore the other walls. Merits a proper gut job, imo. ETA: Your inspo pics are lovely!

As a longtime lover (and buyer) of old neglected homes I can state, "There is no such thing as a steal". Unsolicited advice; live with ugly until you have repaired ALL the important things (roof, plumbing, electrical, windows, insulation).

I agree - pull it all out... although that pedestal sink is very nice. Maybe reuse it in one of the baths if it is in good shape and definitely if it is cast iron and in good shape!

Debbie is right about the sink. Reuse whatever fixtures are in good shape and make sense to your style (or donate/sell). When I said "gut job" for a bathroom like this, I meant the walls needed coming down to the studs. Perhaps I didn't use the right term but I want to make it clear that I'm not advocating throwing fixtures out for the sake of new. I quite like MCM bathrooms with tiled walls in good shape and usually think it's a fabulous idea to work with them. Jessica, are you familiar with Retro Renovation? You might find the site helpful as you decide on your remodel plans. Good luck! Hope you'll keep us posted on your progress.

can't paint tile. do however paint the plaster walls above in light warm grey tone.

I agree with the above. The bathroom really isn't worth spending too much money on. You will lose the basketweave pattern painting the tile, ( I too love a basketweave), and painted tile doesn't wear well. While I'm sure you are going to address the issues in the ceiling, you could try to use what you have to its' best advantage. This photo is fun - http://www.lonny.com/photos/Bathroom/Pink/alR8cztgr08- what about finding a wallpaper that is the correct shade of blue/white to make the room more fun. If possible, I would change out the faucets on the sink (love the sink), and replace the medicine cabinet with a white one - something like this https://www.potterybarn.com/products/hotel-recessed-medicine-cabinet/?pkey=cmedicine-cabinets&isx=0.0.800 I'd also get new sconces or move the old one up to the proper height. A good deep cleaning of the grout and a new shower curtain and the room could really be quite cute.
