Kitchen Drawer Organization

Kitchen reno is wrapping up so I’m slowly moving back in.
I’ve been told I put things in “weird” places when it comes to drawers/cabinets.
I want to do things right this go around.
Starting with the utensil drawer.
(Dining area will be closer to that desk area photographed)
Where would you place items like utensils/Tupperware...
Please ignore my arrows in the photo.

What is your cabinet layout? It's hard to tell from that one photo. What storage do you have in your island?

In hindsight, you should have mapped your kitchen before ordering cabinets. That way, you know you've accounted for all your storage needs and things aren't just placed haphazardly in the end.

I would put the Tupperware near where you stand when doing clean up after meals. I have mine in a drawer below the drawer that has my ziplock bags, press n seal and foil. My kitchen is set up for 2 people at 2 times. My husband does the major of cooking so he set up cookware and utensils, I do the clean up so I put that stuff where I like to work.

When you say utensils do you mean for dining or for cooking? If for dining, I'd store them in the upper drawers to the left of the dishwasher. If for cooking, either the drawer to the right of the sink or the drawer to the right of the range. And for tupperware, I agree that I'd keep it wherever you do cleanup.

I would actually sit down now with the cabinet plan for your kitchen and map everything out before you put anything away. Think about your workflow and how to arrange things so you don't need to go out of your way to get what you need, which generally means keeping things in the work zones in which they'll be used.

Tupperware is as much a”how” as a “where”! Nested? Covers in a caddy? arrange containers by size, depth, or shape? Cabinet or drawer?

I can‘t see what’s on the far end of the island, but I’d probably keep my containers there. Kind of close to clean-up and leftovers on the stove, and close to the refrigerator where they will end up. Mine are on a cabinet now, I sometimes wonder if I should just store them all with their lids on in a jumble lol. With fewer kids at home, DH working from home instead of the office, an no lunches being made and fewer leftovers, I find I’m using fewer containers. There are still too many, though.

First, don't put things away that you don't use. Next, don't put things away in a place just because you had it there before - it's time to start fresh. As others have said, start with the things you use the most, in a designated area: cooking utensils, spices, potholders near the range; knives, cutting boards and colanders near the sink; bags, wraps and storage containers near the cleanup area. Will you leave small appliances (toaster, blender, coffee maker) out on the counter, or do you want them put away after use? If you want them put away, make sure the storage spot is VERY convenient, or it will be easier to leave them out.

Finally, keep in mind that things CAN move again! If you find that your storage plan isn't working for the way you use the kitchen, don't be afraid to try something else.
