A modern house and board and batten can work. But that isn’t a modern house. The lot appears to be wide enough to be able to create a modern house with a side load garage. That would increase the emphasis that this is a residence, and not a garage. The nested gables and hip on hip are not modern at all. They are pseudo traditional. I think that a few changes here could give you a much more modern and pleasing result. With or without board and batten.

I too dislike garage over load homes I do agree that house does not say modren to me maybe they think just the color scheme is modern. I would however like to see the actul plans for the house since they say this is not the look of the house they are building sort of confusing IMHO

Yes, clearly it’s not a modern house. We’re in the framing stage, like I said, so my “garage overload” can’t be changed. What I meant by “somewhat modern” is I don’t want the traditional craftsman decorations/style on the exterior. I would like it to lean a little more modern. Maybe that means “just the color scheme”. Just trying to do the best I can with what I got. Not looking to be insulted. It’s our dream to build our home. I don’t plan on it being the cover home for the next Parade of Homes. It’s a place to raise our family! Thanks

The board and batten will be fine. Do NOT try and put lipstick on by adding stone, horizontal siding, etc. Less is always more.

If you truly want to make it more contemporary, I'd go for a dark exterior color in a gray and just a slightly lighter gray for the trim.

I agree with @cpartist! The stone can scream ”too much”. I read an article about dark exteriors with stone and I must say, some of them looked good BUT to save on costs I would not add stone. If you go to the very end of the article you will see another house without stone and it looks GREAT! Congratulations on your new build.

Why don't you work with your designer to help you visualize some ideas?

There is plenty you can do to the house to change it's look. If the roof is not on, removing all the gables and lowering the pitch would make a big difference.

My opinions only. OP, it's a little difficult to know what you mean by making the siding more modern. But to answer your specific questions:

1) Should I alternate siding materials? No. IMO alternating siding material can be done well but for the most part is poorly executed. From what I have seen it becomes a jumble of materials that detracts from the house.

2) Should we incorporate stone? No. Board and batten siding is classic and timeless. Stone is a passing fad in its current application, especially now with it being added to places where it doesn't belong. Don't get me wrong, stone can be appropriate and also classic, but not the way it is thrown about now on the exterior as some sort of stick on applique.

Naturally you would look for colors that you prefer (dark) rather than the white shown below. This is just to give you an idea of contemporary board and batten siding appearance.

Any concerns about the ability to handle water in the area between the 2car garage gable and the entry gables? Seems like a ton of roof plane draining to a small area!

IMO the three gables at the front make the design a bit too busy. I would simply them to this.

I like the all B&B look. We are forced to add stone to our house because of a new code, so I'm struggling the opposite direction. So go for it.

What colors are you thinking?

Have you herd of Accoya? We have done a few projects where the contractors use Accoya and it looks beautiful.
